Хозяин и/или хозяйка; владелец; господин, т.е. тот, кто обладает
властью и контролирует кого-либо или что-либо:

• The dog ran alongside his mistress. – Собака бежала возле хозяйки.

90. Ill – sick – sore
Значение к рассмотрению: больной. Ill и sick могут быть взаи­мозаменяемыми и часто употребляются с глаголами to be, become, get, feel и make:
• He’s ill/sick with u. – У него грипп. Он болеет гриппом.
§1. Ill [ɪl]
Формальное ill в значении ‘больной, нездоровый’ связано с до­статочно серьезными заболеваниями. Ill не ставят перед существи­тельными, если только его не сопровождает наречие:
• He’s been ill with meningitis. – У него менингит.
• Similar services are available to mentally ill people. – Подоб-
ные услуги предусмотрены для лиц с психическими заболева­ниями.

Обычно ill ставят после глаголов to be, fall, get, take и т. п. В отличие от sick и sore, ill может определяться наречиями:
• I was taken ill with food poisoning. – Я заболел потому, что отравился.
• He is very ill. – Он очень болен.
Сочетание ‘the + наречие + ill’ обозначает существительное
‘больные’:
• Hospice cares for the terminally ill. – Хоспис заботится о не­излечимо больных.

§2. Sick [sɪk]
1) Менее формальное sick в значении ‘нездоровый, испыты-
вающий недомогание’ относится к общему состоянию человека и не предполагает серьезного заболевания. Sick может стоять пе­ред существительным, а в паре с the образует существительное ‘больные’:
• Don’t ask a babysitter to look after a sick child. – Не проси няню присматривать за больным ребенком.
• She gave herself up to caring for the sick. – Она полностью по­святила себя уходу за больными.
2) Сочетание to be + sick может иметь два значения:
• I am sick. – 1) Я болен. Мне нездоровится.
2) Меня тошнит. У меня рвота.
To feel sick обозначает ‘чувствовать подступающую тошноту’:
• I feel sick. – Меня мутит. Меня подташнивает.
3) Sick используют, когда не выходят на работу или пропускают
занятия по причине болезни:
• He is o sick today. – Он отсутствует по болезни.
• He phoned to say that he’s o sick today. – Он позвонил и ска-
зал, что сегодня он болен.

to be o sick – отсутствовать по причине болезни; to be on sick leave – быть на больничном; to phone/ring/call in sick – позвонить, чтобы сообщить о своем
невыходе на работу по причине болезни.
4) Пресыщенный; уставший от кого-либо/чего-либо; ≈ просто
тошнит:
• I am sick of him. – Меня от него тошнит.
• I’m sick and tired of your excuses! – Ты меня достал своими
извинениями!

4) Больной, неадекватный в плане поведения:
• She thinks I’m sick for having a rat as a pet. – Она считает меня ненормальным, потому что у меня крыса – домашний питомец.

§3. Sore [sɔː]
Русскому ‘больной; болезненный, воспаленный’ в сочетаниях с названиями частей тела (больной палец/колено/горло) соответствует sore, если болезненное состояние является временным, а не хрони­ческим:
• I could not write because of my sore nger. – Больной палец мешал мне писать.
• Don’t touch the sore spot. – Не трогай больное место/ранку.
При хроническом заболевании употребляют bad:
• The boy couldn’t go in for sports because of his bad heart. – Мальчик не мог заниматься спортом из-за больного сердца.

§1. Issue [‘ɪʃuː], [‘ɪsjuː]
Cпорный вопрос; предмет спора или разногласий; проблема.
Issue в речи – это способ не произносить всегда негативное слово problem. Issue чаще связано со спорными социально-политическими
вопросами, которые затрагивают интересы большинства людей, и вызывают бурные дискуссии в обществе:
• The union plans to raise the issue of overtime. – Профсоюз пла­нирует поднять вопрос о сверхурочной работе.
• The problem raises issues of gender and identity. – Эта проблема поднимает вопросы гендера и идентичности.

§2. Matter [‘mætə]
Вопрос или дело, которое не только обсуждают, но решением которого занимаются вплотную. Matter в отличие от issue, слово нейтральное в плане подтекста (= и не хорошо, и не плохо), хотя и используется для выяснения разного рода проблемных ситуаций. Также matter не столь масштабно, как issue, оно более личностное и практическое:
• We have given this matter considerable thought. – Мы очень мно­го думали над этим вопросом.
• It is just a matter of luck. – Это кому как повезет.

Формальные, т.е. необязательные к переводу, но обязательные структурно, подлежащие it и there формируют безличные предло­жения, в которых отсутствует действующее лицо или объект. Они же обеспечивают наличие обязательного сказуемого в предложении:
• It’s getting dark. – Становится темно.
• There’s a restaurant around the corner. – За углом есть рес-
торан.
IT THERE
1) It как подлежащее обозначает ситуацию или вещь, но не челове­ка. После оборота it + be в функции дополнения может стоять существи­тельное, местоимение или краткое прилагательное:
• It is midnight. – Полночь.
• It’s me. – Это я.
• It is awful. – Это ужасно.

1) Русские безличные предложе­ния, которые начинаются с обстоя­тельств места, времени и образа действий, оформляются оборотом there + be:
• There is a circus in the city. – В горо­де есть цирк.
• There was a lot of coming and going. – Люди приходили и ухо­дили.
IT THERE
2) It ставят в безличных предложе­ниях при описании погодных усло­вий, температуры, времени, расстоя­ния или настроения:
• It is spring. – Сейчас весна.
• It was raining. – Шел дождь.
• It is ve o’clock. – Сейчас 5 часов.
• It’s over 30° outside. – На улице
больше 30°.
• It is a mile to the town. – До города миля.
3) It и there ставят в безличных предложениях с глаголами appear, come,
remain, seem и т. п., сохраняя все их смыслы:
• It came as a shock. – Это оказалось шоком.
• It remains to be seen. – Поживем – увидим.
• It seemed as if he had been cursed.– Казалось, что его прокляли.
4) There не употребляют с прилагательными, но и it, и there ставят с при-
лагательным likely, чтобы выразить уверенность в высказывании:
• It is hardly likely to happen. – Это едва ли произойдет.
It looks like … / It looks as if … . – Похоже, что … . Кажется, что … .
It hurts. – Больно.
It seems (to me) that ... . – (Мне) ка-
жется, что... .
2) There выражает идею количе­ства:
• There’s only a day left. – Один день остался.
• There is much more. / There are many more. – Есть еще много.
• There came a day when ... . – Настал
день, когда ... .
• There remains one question. – Оста­ется один вопрос.
• There seems to be a lack of logic in his remarks. – Его словам, похоже, не хватает логики.
• There are likely to be further at­tacks. – Наверняка будут и другие нападения.

1) Исчисляемое существительное job в значении ‘официальное место работы’ может стоять в единственном или множественном числе и употребляться с артиклем а. Оно обозначает работу по найму и указывает на определенный круг обязанностей, исполнение которых оплачивается работодателем; syn. – profession, occupation:
• He is ready to take any job. – Он готов взяться за любую работу.
• Cleaning and washing jobs are usually low paid. – Работы по
уборке обычно низко оплачиваются.
