§4. Sight [saɪt]
1) Sight и view не всегда являются полными синонимами в зна-
чении ‘поле зрения, вид’ в устойчивых словосочетаниях:
• There was no one in sight/view. – Никого не было видно.

§5. View [vjuː]
View обозначает что именно видит откуда-либо говорящий,
поэтому view часто употребляют с обстоятельством места, откуда
ведется наблюдение. Не случайно одно из производных view – это
viewer (зритель, наблюдатель). Следовательно, view – это тот вид
местности, который можно охва тить взглядом, находясь в определенном месте (н-р, из окна, с какой-либо возвышенности):
• The cottage had a delightful sea view. – Из коттеджа открывался
восхитительный вид на море.

§1. Late
1) Русскому глаголу ‘опаздывать’ соответствует английское словосочетание to be + прилагательное late. Определение, указывающее на время опоздания, ставят перед late:
• I was ve minutes late. – Я опоздал на пять минут.
Внимание! – Выражению ‘опоздать/не успеть на поезд/автобус
и т.д.’ соответствует ‘to miss the train/bus’:
• You’ve missed the bus. It just went by. – Ты опоздал на автобус,
он только что уехал.
2) Наречие или прилагательное late оформляет завершение не-
ких периодов времени:
• Now I’m old enough to stay up late. – Я уже стар, чтобы не
спать ночь напролет.
• He passed away late last year. – Он умер в конце прошлого года.

§3. The latter
Прилагательное the latter всегда стоит с артиклем the и обо-
значает ‘последний/второй (из 2-х упомянутых)’; ant. – the former:
• Given the choice of pink or green, I’d choose the former, while
she would choose the latter. – Случись выбирать между розовым и зеленым, я бы выбрала первое, а она – второе.
§4. Last
1) В названиях периодов времени, содержащих прилагательное
last в значении ‘прошлый, предыдущий’ ни артикль, ни предлог не
ставят:
• last month/night/Sunday – в прошлом месяце/вчера вечером/в
прошлое воскресение.

§5. The/your last
Прилагательное the/your last обозначает ‘последний в своем
ряду’ и указывает на завершение этого ряда:
• his last visit – его последний визит (больше он не появлялся);
• She’s liable to have the last word in any shoot-out. – В любой
перепалке за ней остается последнее слово.

§6. The latest
Прилагательное the latest, в отличие от the last предполагает
дальнейшее пополнение уже существующего ряда:

1) При описании возраста ребенка, размера или величины употребляют оба
прилагательных:
• little/small child – маленький ребенок (по возрасту);
• little = small table/village – столик/деревенька.
2) Little, как правило, не сочетается
с very, quite, too, но перед ним можно ставить другие прилагательные,
особ. nice, pretty и cute:
• cute little face – смазливое личико.
Исключение – дети:
• very little children – очень маленькие дети.

the smallest, ant. – big, large.
2) Small можно определять наречия-
ми very, quite, too, но другие прилагательные перед ним не ставят:

Запомни: a little/a small amount of sth, a little bit of sth – незначительное/
небольшое количество чего-либо; ≈ совсем чуть-чуть.
5) Little и small часто переводятся как ‘незначительный, несущественный;
несерьезный; небольшой, мелкий’; syn. – minor:
• little/small change – небольшое изменение;
• little/small detail – мелкая/несущественная деталь;
• little/small dierence – незначительная разница;
• little/small problem – небольшая проблема;
• little/small things – мелочи.
6) Little в значении ‘мало’ опреде-
ляет неисчисляемые и абстрактные
существительные:
• little food – мало еды;
• little interest – незначительный ин-
терес.
3) Small ставят и перед существительным, и после глагола:
• small boat – лодочка;
• The boat is small. – Лодка малень-
кая.
4) Small обозначает размер, объем
или количество:
• coat three sizes too small – пальто на
три размера меньше;
• a small amount of money – маленькая сумма денег.
6) Small определяет группы людей:
• a small group of people – небольшая
группа людей.
7) Little означает ‘младший’:
• my little sister – моя младшая сестра.
8) Little – эмоциональное слово,
выражает отношение или чувство
(нежность, жалость и т. п.):
• my little darling – лапочка, зайка
(обращение к кому-либо);
• poor little thing – бедняжка.
7) Small обозначает невысокий
рост; syn. – short, not tall:
