103. Meaning – sense – significance
Значение к рассмотрению: значение, смысл. Взаимозаменяемость:
– basic meaning/sense – основное значение; – gurative meaning/sense – переносное значение; – literal meaning/sense – буквальное, прямое значение; – the original/exact = precise/general/true meaning/sense/ signi-
cance – первоначальный/точный/общий/ истинный смысл;
– in the full meaning/sense of the word – в полном смысле этого
слова;
– to have a meaning/sense/signicance – иметь смысл; – to grasp/understand the meaning/signicance of sth – ухва-
тить/понять смысл или значение чего-либо.
§1. Meaning [‘miːnɪŋ]
1) Значение или смысл слов и выражений; syn. – sense:
• What’s the meaning/sense of the word? – Каково значение этого слова?
• Honesty? You don’t know the meaning of the word! – Честность? Да ты хоть знаешь, что это такое?

1) Значение или смысл слов и выражений; syn. – meaning
• That word has three senses/meanings. – У этого слова три зна­чения.

Mood [muːd] Temper [‘tempə]
1) Mood и temper взаимозаменяемы в значении, как человек себя чув- ствует в определенный момент:
• in a bad/foul = lthy/good mood/temper – быть в плохом/ отвратительном/ хорошем настроении.
2) Mood и temper обозначают некий период времени, когда человек сер-
дится по поводу чего-либо:
• in a mood = in a (bad) temper – в плохом настроении;
• be in one of your moods – быть не в духе.
3) Mood – это настроение группы
людей или атмосфера какого-либо места:
• He misread the mood of the elector­ate. – Он неверно истолковал на­строение электората.

Значения к рассмотрению: (пере)движение, перемещение; шаг. Взаимозаменяемость:
– little/slight movement/motion – легкое движение; – movement/motion with/of your hand – движение рукой/руки.
§1. Motion [‘məuʃ(ə)n]
1) Формальное, близкое к научное терминологии, motion обо-
значает
процесс движения предмета или способ этого движения:
• The rocking motion of the boat made her feel sick. – От покачи­вания лодки ее затошнило.
• All motion is relative. – Всякое движение относительно.

1) Movement обозначает движения тела или частей тела; syn. –
motion:

• Her movements were clumsy. – Ее движения были неуклюжими.
2) Передвижение, перемещение с места на место. Именно move-
ment часто сочетается с прилагательными направления:
• circular/downward/upward/forward/backward movement – круго­вое движение; движение вниз/вверх/вперед/назад;
• She made a circular movement to show o her new dress. – Она сделала круговое движение, чтобы показать свое новое платье.
3) (Общественно-политическое) движение:

Формально-деловое to note в значении ‘замечать, обращать вни-
мание’, как правило, не ставят в длительные времена:

§2. To notice [‘nəutɪs]
Разговорное to notice в значении ‘замечать, обращать внимание’ не используют в длительных временах. Его подтекст – увидеть, услышать или осознать что-либо. В отличие от глаголов to spot и to sight, to notice никак не характеризует эти действия:
• The rst thing I noticed about the room was the smell. – Первое, что я заметил в комнате, был запах.

Неожиданно заметить, высмотреть, разглядеть, увидеть (кого-
либо/что-либо) на большом расстоянии, особ., если искали долго:
• The missing boys were sighted by a rescue helicopter. – Пропав­ших мальчиков заметили с поискового вертолета.
• It was many weeks before we sighted land. – Прошла не одна неделя прежде, чем мы увидели сушу.

§4. To spot [spɔt]
To spot обозначает ‘заметить, обнаружить, найти взглядом; нео-
жиданно увидеть то, что вы искали или то, что трудно разглядеть’:
• He was spotted by Warner Brothers. – Его заметила компания ‘Уорнер Бразерс’.
• They have spotted us, let’s run! – Они нас засекли, бежим!
