Наиболее нейтральное слово делового стиля в значении ‘нани­мать на более-менее постоянную работу на рядовые должности, не требующие высокой квалификации’; syn. – to take on:
• She is employed in a big shop. – Она работает в большом ма­газине.
§2. To engage [ɪn’geɪʤ]
To engage в значении ‘нанимать, брать на работу’ относится к официально-деловому стилю и чаще используется для краткос­рочных работ:
• He is currently engaged as a consultant. – В настоящее время он работает консультантом.

Слово не столь формального стиля в отличие от to engage. To
hire обозначает краткосрочную работу; ant. – to re:

• He hired himself out as a photographer. – Он нанялся на работу
фотографом.

Значения к рассмотрению: специально; особенно. Specially –
менее формальное слово, зато especially гораздо более частотное.
§1. Especially [ɪ’speʃ(ə)lɪ]
1) Especially в значении ‘особенно, в особенности, главным об-
разом’ употребляют для выделения одного объекта при сравнении его с другими. Как наречие especially связано с глаголами, но его часто ставят перед существительным или после него, выделяя его запятой. При этом especially не может открывать предложение, это функция словосочетания in particular:
• Everyone loves it, especially children. – Все это любят, особенно дети.
• For women especially, beauty is identied with youthfulness. – Особенно для женщин красота отождествляется с молодо­стью.
• I especially like sweets (Especially I … конфеты.
• In particular, I enjoyed the boat trip. – Особенно мне понрави­лась прогулка на лодке.
2) Часто especially и specially в значении ‘особенно, очень, че-
ресчур’ ставят перед прилагательным:
• (e)specially dicult/bright/clever – особенно трудный/яркий/ умный;
• She’s not (e)specially smart. – Не очень-то она умна.
3) Especially в значении ‘особенно, в особенности, главным об-
разом, а именно’ ставят перед предлогами и союзами во второй ча­сти предложения, выделяя его запятой:
• I love Rome, especially in spring. – Я люблю Рим, особенно весной.
• Art books are expensive, especially if they contain colour illustra­tions. – Книги по искусству дорогие, особенно если содержат цветные иллюстрации.

1) Specially подчеркивает направленность усилий, цель дей-
ствия для особого случая в значении ‘специально, только для того, чтобы’:

2) Specially используется с причастием (3-я форма глагола):
• The car was specially made for the occasion. – Автомобиль спе­циально сделали для этого случая.

to study – to teach – to train

§1. To examine [ɪg’zæmɪn]
(Тщательно) изучать, исследовать; рассматривать (на предмет чего-либо). To examine подчеркивает цель такого рассмотрения – для того, чтобы прийти к какому-либо решению:

§2. To learn [lɜːn] – learnt2 [lɜːnt] /
learned2 [lɜːnd]
To learn и to study в значении ‘учить, учиться; изучать (в школе/в универ-
ситете/на курсах)’ могут быть синонимами:
• to study/learn a foreign language/history – учить/изучать иностранный язык/историю;
• to study/learn to be a doctor – учиться на врача.
To learn обозначает овладение как практическими навыками и умения­ми, так и теоретическими:
• He is learning to drive/to dance. – Он учится водить машину/танцевать.
Запомни: to learn sth from sb – научиться
чему-либо у кого-либо; to learn by heart/by rote – учить наизусть; зубрить; to learn by/from experience – учить­ся на опыте; to learn your lesson – получить хо­роший урок;
to learn by/from your mistakes –
учиться на своих ошибках.
3) To learn предполагает практическое использование знаний. Это не
только процесс изучения теории (to study), но и практический результат. Можно изучать (to study) что-либо в теории, но так ничего и не выучить (to learn) на практике:
• I studied English at school, but I learned nothing. – Я изучал английский в школе, но так его и не выучил.
4) Русскому ‘учиться хорошо/плохо’ соответствуют to do well/badly:
• He’s doing very well at school. – Он очень хорошо учится в школе.
To study обозначает теоретические знания, полученные в результате на­пряженной умственной работы:
• Did you study any sciences? – Ты
Запомни: to study at school/college/ univer­sity – учиться в школе/в колледже/в
университете; to study under sb – заниматься у какого-либо педагога; to study for exams/a diploma – го­товиться к экзаменам/к защите дип­лома.
§3. To study [‘stʌdɪ]

§4. To teach [tiːʧ] – taught2 [tɔːt]
1) Учить, обучать; преподавать; быть учителем/преподавателем:
• I teach Physics. – Я преподаю физику.
• She taught English to students. – Она учила студентов английс-
кому.
2) В этом слове может присутствовать угроза наказания:

To train обозначает обучать профессиональным практическим
навыкам, необходимым для работы:
• A lot of employers can aord to train their workers. – Многие работодатели могут позволить себе дать подготовку своим ра­бочим.
• All members of the team have trained in rst aid. – Все члены команды прошли обучение по оказанию первой медицинской помощи.

Значения к рассмотрению: мало; немного. (A) few и (a) little – это именно тот случай, когда артикль определяет перевод заявлен­ных слов.
1) (А) few употребляют с исчисляе­мыми существительными:
• few books – мало книг;
• a few books – несколько книг.
2) Few и little без артикля в значении ‘мало’ имеют отрицательный оттенок и обозначают чувствительную нехватку необходимого:
• I speak little English. – Я плохо говорю по-английски.
• I understood little of what he said. – Я мало что понял из его слов.
В речи вместо few предпочтительнее сочетания only a few/a little:
• Only a few people can do it. – Лишь немногие могут это сделать.
• He has only a little Chinese. – Он плохо знает китайский.
1) (А) little употребляют с неисчис­ляемыми существительными:
• little money – мало денег;
• a little money – немного денег.

3) A few и a little в значении ‘несколько, немного’ отрицательного оттенка не имеют и обозначают некоторое небольшое, но все же достаточное коли­чество; syn. – at least there are some:

4) Артикль the выполняет свою указательную функцию, никак не влияя на смыслы few и little:
• The little that I’ve seen took me aback. – То немногое, что я увидел, ошело­мило меня.

5) Предлог of c (a) few и (a) little используют, если эти слова стоят перед
артиклями, указательными местоимениями (this, that), притяжательными (my, his) и косвенными местоимениями (me, him):

• 7 is 4 less than 11. – 7 на 4 меньше 11.

• a population of less than 2000 – население менее 2000 человек.

8) В сравнительной конструкции с количественным определением исчис-
ляемых существительных используют и fewer, и less, но в разных позици­ях по отношению к определяемому существительному:
• He returned fewer books to the library. – Он вернул в библиотеку меньше книг, чем взял.
• He returned three books less. – Он вернул на три книги меньше.
Запомни: no fewer than – не меньше, чем; fewer and fewer – все меньше и
меньше; quite a few/a good few – довольно много, немало;
