§1. Cause [kɔːz]
Причина, повод, основание, как пусковой механизм каких-либо
событий, поступков или чувств. Это объективное, чаще негативное,
понятие, никак не зависящее от человека, его мнений и оправданий:
• What are the causes of the crisis? – Каковы причины кризиса?
• There is no cause for alarm. – Нет оснований для беспокойства.

Причина, повод, основание. Это субъективное мнение человека, его попытка объяснить причину произошедшего или оправдать
что-либо:

Взаимозаменяемость:
– for certain/sure – обязательно, непременно;
– certain/condent/sure about = of (doing) sth – уверенный
в чем-либо;
– to make certain/sure that – убедиться, удостовериться, что …;
– to feel sure/condent/certain – быть уверенным, чувствовать
себя уверенным;
– sure/certain/who/what/how etc – уверенный кто/что/как и т. п.;
– quite/absolutely/completely/fairly/pretty sure/condent/cer-
tain – совершенно/абсолютно/полностью/вполне уверенный;

§1. Condent [‘kɔnfɪd(ə)nt]
Абсолютно уверенный в том, что что-то хорошее произойдет.
Также уверенный в своих силах человек. Слово формальное, используется чаще в утвердительных предложениях:
• I’m 99 % condent of success. – Я на 99% уверен в успехе.
• In time he became more condent. – Со временем он стал более
уверенным.

уверенности.
§2. Certain [‘sɜːt(ə)n] §2. Sure [ʃuə]
а) Формальное certain – это 100 %
уверенность в людях или событиях;
ant. – uncertain:

а) Разговорное sure допускает возможность ошибки в суждении;
ant. – unsure:
• He is sure of success. – Он уверен

в) Конструкции to be sure (that) и to be certain (that) не различаются по
значению в отрицательных предложениях:
• I’m not sure/certain that it is so. – Я не уверен, что это так.

§3. Эти конструкции передают разное отношение человека к
действию:
– to be certain/sure to do sth – это уверенность, что действие
будет совершено и соответствует словам ‘обязательно, непременно’:

– to be sure and do sth – это настоятельная просьба в форме
повелительного наклонения:

– to be sure of doing sth обозначает только намерение или мне-
ние человека с большей или меньшей степенью уверенности:

45. Chance – opportunity – possibility
Значения к рассмотрению: шанс, возможность, вероятность.
Взаимозаменяемость:
– remote/slim possibility/chance – малая вероятность, слабый шанс;
– to let the chance/opportunity slip, to lose/miss the chance/
opportunity – упустить возможность/удобный случай.
§1. Chance [ʧɑːns]
Неожиданный шанс, возможность как удачное стечение обстоятельств, когда можно осуществить нечто давно задуманное. Слово
может иметь негативный оттенок и определяться числительным;
syn. – opportunity:
• Is there any chance/opportunity of seeing him today? – Есть возможность/шанс встретиться с ним сегодня?
• There’s a chance that he might go bankrupt. – Есть шанс, что он
может обанкротиться.

§2. Opportunity [ˌɔpə’tjuːnətɪ]
Шанс, удобный случай, стечение обстоятельств, благоприятная возможность. Слово стилистически формальное. В отличие от chance –
неожиданной возможности, opportunity – это заранее просчитанная
возможность сделать что-то хорошее или нужное, выгодно приобрести что-либо в результате целенаправленных усилий; syn. – chance:
• We want equal opportunities in employment for young people. –
Мы хотим равных возможностей в трудоустройстве для молодежи.
• Being a sales manager gives me opportunities to travel a lot. –
Должность менеджера по продажам дает возможность много
путешествовать.

Есть возможность достать билеты на сегодняшний концерт?
