OUR UNIVERSITY
The idea of creating a polytechnic higher education institution in the city of Gomel belongs to the former director of “Gomselmash” Agricultural Machine Plant Ivan Kotenok. His initiative supported by local authorities and the Ministry of Higher and High Specialized Education was that impact which resulted in establishing an Engineering Faculty of the Order of the Red Banner of Labour Belarussian Technical Institute at “Gomselmash” Plant.
First 200 students of an evening form of education started their studies on October 1, 1968. Instruction was provided in three specialities: manufacturing engineering, metal cutting tools and machine tools, equipment and technology for metal forming, casting equipment and technology.

Years passed and in January 1973 a Gomel Branch of Polytechnic Institute was opened on the base of the Engineering Faculty. The fi rst graduation of the students from the Evening Department of the Gomel Branch took place in the same year.
In 1981 the Gomel Branch of Belarussian Polytechnic Institute was reorganized into Gomel Polytechnic Institute. Five faculties were established at the Institute: Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Technological, Automation and Control, Evening Faculty.
In 1995 the Institute was named after an outstanding aircraft designer Pavel Sukhoi.
In 1998 July 1, Sukhoi Gomel Polytechnic Institute was reorganized into Sukhoi State Technical University of Gomel.
Since 2007 Sergei Timoshin, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor, has been the Rector of the University.
In 2012 the University was granted the status of scientifi c institution.
Nowadays the University is one of the leading technical education institutions in the Republic of Belarus and it provides training for the graduation of engineering personnel and higher scientifi c qualifi cation personnel for such branches of industry as mechanical engineering, metallurgy, power engineering, economy, radio electronic engineering and information technologies. In accordance with special license to provide educational activity the University provides instruction in 21 specialities of the fi rst level of higher education (for a Diploma of Higher Education), in 8 specialities of the second level of higher education (for a Master’s Degree), in 9 specialities for a PhD and Doctor’s Degrees, 18 specialities for retraining people with higher education and also pre-University training for students of high and high specialized education institutions.
About 10,000 people work and study at the University. There are 7 faculties and 1 institute, including Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Technological, Economic and Humanities, Automation and Information Systems, Correspondence, Preparatory (Pre-University), Up-Grading and Retraining Institute.
The curriculum of junior years includes courses for general knowledge: Philosophy, History of Belarus and a foreign language. Specialization begins in senior years. The methods of instruction include lectures, seminars and practical classes.
The academic year has two terms: the autumn term and the spring term. Each term ends with a set of examinations and credit tests. Students’ knowledge is evaluated through term papers and oral and written tests.
All students can spend their time in many interesting and useful ways. There is a choir, a tourists’ club, groups of modern and folk dance, a drama society and lots of sport societies, so everyone can fi nd a pastime to their liking.

At present the University has 4 buildings for classes including laboratory building for heavy equipment and 3 students’ hostels with all modern conveniences.
Medical servicing of students is provided at two fi rst aid stations equipped with all necessary equipment. There are 2 cafés (140 places) and a cafeteria for students and employees and 2 cafeterias at the students’ hostels. Sports facilities of the University include game and training halls, open sports grounds, gym halls.
The University library stocks over 550,000 volumes of literature and enables the subscription to scientifi c journals. Electronic catalogue of the library, electronic library and other databases are off ered to the users of local computer network of the University. The library also provides user’s access to the Internet resources and full text databases of scientifi c periodicals.
The University has its own publishing center which provides publishing educational, scientifi c, popular science, production-practical and reference literature and making forms and other polygraphic products. It also enables to sell by retail books, magazines, journals and stationary articles. Scientifi c and practical journal “Vestnik of Sukhoi State Technical University of Gomel” included on the list of Supreme Certifi cation Commission for publishing dissertation thesis in engineering for higher degrees is published. The University newspaper “Sushka” is printed presenting the material refl ecting the life of the University and its departments.

МЕСТОИМЕНИЕ (THE PRONOUN)
Личные местоимения (Personal Pronouns)
Личные местоимения в английском языке имеют форму именительно­го падежа (the Nominative Case) и объектного падежа (the Objective Case).
В предложении личные местоимения в именительном падеже явля­ются подлежащим, а в объектном падеже – дополнением: I gave him my book. – Я дал ему свою книгу.
Притяжательные местоимения (Possessive Pronouns)
Притяжательные местоимения в английском языке выражают при­надлежность и имеют основную и абсолютную формы. Основная фор­ма употребляется, когда притяжательное местоимение стоит перед име­нем существительным: This is my car. – Это моя машина.

Абсолютная форма употребляется для того, чтобы определяемое су­ществительное не повторялось: This is my car and this is yours. – Это моя машина, а это твоя.
Возвратные местоимения (Refl exive Pronouns)
Возвратные местоимения образуются путем добавления к притяжа­тельным местоимениям суффиксов -self в единственном числе, -selves во множественном числе: I’ll do it myself. – Я сделаю это сам.
! Возвратные местоимения не используются после глаголов to feel (чувствовать), to relax (расслабляться), to behave (вести себя, поступать, держаться), to concentrate (сосредоточиться), to wash (мыть), to dress (одеваться), to shave (бриться): I feel great. – Я чувствую себя велико­лепно.
Но: Wash yourself! – Помойся! Dress yourself! – Оденься! Shave yourself! – Побрейся! Behave yourself! – Веди себя хорошо!

Данные местоимения используют для образования специальных во­просов.
К вопросительным местоимениям относятся: Who? (Кто?), Whom? (Кого? Кому?), What? (Что?), Which? (Который?), Whose? (Чей?).

Вопросительное местоимение Who? имеет два падежа: именитель­ный – Who?, объектный – Whom?. Именительный падеж употребляется в качестве подлежащего: Who wants to be the rst? – Кто хочет быть пер- вым? Объектный падеж употребляется в качестве дополнения: Whom are you waiting for? – Кого ты ждешь?
Вопросительное местоимение What? может использоваться со зна­чением какой: What country do you live in? – В какой стране ты живешь? Which? употребляется, когда речь идет о выборе из ограниченного чис­ла лиц и предметов: Which ring do you like? – Какое кольцо тебе нра­вится?
Относительные местоимения (Relative Pronouns)
Относительные местоимения употребляются для связи придаточно­го предложения с главным.
К относительным местоимениям относятся: who (кто), whom (кого),
whose (чей), which (который), that (который): The man who was in the offi ce is my supervisor. – Мужчина, который был в офисе, – мой научный
руководитель. The man whom we saw in the o ce is my supervisor. – Муж- чина, которого мы видели в офисе, – мой научный руководитель.
Местоимение which употребляется, когда речь идет о неодушевлен­ных предметах и животных: I like my dress which I have bought. – Мне нравится платье, которое я купила.
Местоимение who употребляется с одушевленными именами суще­ствительными: This is that man who was there. – Это тот мужчина, кото­рый был там.
Взаимные местоимения (Reciprocal Pronouns)
К взаимным местоимениям относятся each other и one another (один другого, друг друга).
Each other относится к двум лицам или предметам: They hate each other. – Они ненавидят друг друга.
One another относится к большему количеству лиц или предметов:
The students of our group help one another. – Студенты нашей группы по­могают друг другу.
Неопределенные и отрицательные местоимения
(Indefi nite and Negative Pronouns)
К ним относятся местоимения some и any, no и none.
Местоимения some и any употребляются в значении некоторого ко­личества немного, сколько-нибудь. Используются с неисчисляемыми именами существительными.

Some употребляется в утвердительных предложениях: I have some
cards. – У меня есть несколько карточек.
Any употребляется в вопросительных и отрицательных предложе- ниях: Do you have any cards? – У тебя есть карточки? I don’t have any cards. – У меня нет карточек.
Однако в вопросительных предложениях, выражающих просьбу или предложение, употребляется местоимение some: Would you like some tea? – Вы не хотели бы немного чая?
Если any стоит в утвердительном предложении, то его переводят на русский язык словами «любой», «всякий»: Any vegetable is useful for your health. – Любой овощ полезен для твоего здоровья.
Местоимение no заменяет конструкцию not … a (перед исчисляе­мыми именами существительными в единственном числе), not … any (перед неисчисляемыми и исчисляемыми именами существительными во множественном числе): I have no car. (I don’t have a car.) – У меня нет машины. We have no sugar. (We don’t have any sugar.) – У нас нет сахара.
Местоимение none заменяет исчисляемые существительные в един­ственном и во множественном числе и неисчисляемые существитель­ные: Are there any pens on the table? – No, there are none.
Местоимения some / any / no в сочетании с thing (для неодушевленных существительных), body (для одушевленных существительных), where образуют неопределенные местоимения: something (что-нибудь, что­то); anything (что-то, что-нибудь); nothing (ничего); somebody (кто-то, кто-нибудь); anybody (кто-то, кто-нибудь); nobody (никто); somewhere (где-нибудь, куда-нибудь, где-то); anywhere (где-нибудь, куда-нибудь, где-то); nowhere ( нигде): I have something for you. – У меня есть что­то для тебя. Is there anybody in the room? – Ecть кто-нибудь в комнате? I have seen him nowhere. – Я его нигде не видел.
Местоимения much
(много), little (мало), a little (немного) употре­бляются с неисчисляемыми существительными, а местоимения many (много), few (мало), a few (немного) употребляются с исчисляемыми существительными.
Местоимения little и few несут отрицательный смысл (почти нет, недостаточно), а местоимения а little и a few – положительный смысл (немного, но есть, достаточно): She has a few toys. – У нее несколько игрушек (мало, но достаточно). She has few toys. – У нее мало игрушек (почти нет, недостаточно).
Местоимение one используется, чтобы избежать повторения опре­деляемого существительного: I like these dresses. I think I’ll buy the red one. – Мне нравятся эти платья. Я думаю, я куплю красное.

Особенности употребелния местоимений all, both, either,
neither, other, another, each, every
Местоимение all (всё, все) употребляется с неисчисляемыми и ис­числяемыми именами существительными во множественном числе: All the pupils go to the museum. – Все школьники идут в музей.
Местоимение both (оба) является определением перед существи­тельным: Both the girls like this dress. – Обеим девочкам нравится это платье.
Местоимения either (любой, тот или другой, каждый (один из двух)),
neither (ни тот, ни другой) относятся к двум лицам или предметам: There are two pens. Take either. – Вот две ручки. Возьми любую. Neither of the students are right. – Никто из студентов не прав.
Существуют следующие конструкции:
either … or (или … или; либо … либо): He is either a doctor or a
vet. – Он либо доктор, либо ветеринар.
neither … nor (ни … ни): Neither my friend nor I like this car. – Ни
моему другу, ни мне не нравится эта машина.
Местоимение other (другой (иной)) употребляется в единственном и во множественном числе: Give me please other books. – Дайте мне, по­жалуйста, другие книги.
Местоимение the other (другой (один из двух)): The car is on the other side of the street. – Машина на другой стороне улицы.
Местоимение another (другой (еще один, дополнительный)) упо­требляется только в единственном числе: Give me please another book. – Дайте мне, пожалуйста, другую книгу (еще одну книгу). Местоимение
another (другой) не употребляется с конкретным предметом: We’ll try to do it another day. – Мы попробуем сделать это в другой день.
Местоимение each (каждый) употребляется с ограниченным числом лиц или предметов: Each applicant wants to enter the university. – Каждый абитуриент хочет поступить в университет.
Местоимения every (каждый, всякий), everything (всё), everybody (все), everywhere (везде) употребляются с неограниченным количе­ством лиц или предметов. Местоимение every является определением перед исчисляемыми именами существительными в единственном чис­ле: I go to the university every day. – Я хожу в университет каждый день.
