The country has a relatively mild climate throughout the year due to
maritime infl uences. The warm waters of the North Atlantic Drift (Gulf
Stream) move from the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea across
the Atlantic, and so reach the shores of Northwest Europe. That is why in
winter the coasts are free of ice and the warm air passes over the British Isles
throughout the year.
The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the
English Channel and washed by the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the
Irish Sea. The English Channel, in its widest part in the west is 240 km wide,
and in the narrowest, what is called the Strait of Dover, only 32 km. So,
the islands have had an easy and mainly profi table contact with mainland
Europe. In the past there were a number of schemes how to connect the two
coasts. In 1994 the dream came true: the construction of the two-rail tunnel
was completed and it was opened for public use.
The United Kingdom has a total area of 244,177 square kilometres. The
capital of the country is London. It has a population of about 9 million people,
including its suburbs. Birmingham is the United Kingdom’s second-largest
city. The total population of the UK is over 65 million people. About eighty
percent of the population is urban. England and Wales occupy the southern
part of Great Britain, while Scotland occupies its northern part.
The rivers in Great Britain are not very long. The main rivers are the
Thames, the Severn, the Trent and some others.
Although a small island, Great Britain has a remarkable variety of
landscapes. To the north and west are highlands – the mountains of Scotland,
Cambria and Wales, and the Pennine Chain. To the east are fl at plains, and
in the south are lowlands broken by low ranges of hills. To the south-west
are the bleak moors of Devon and Cornwall. The highest mountain in Great
Britain is Ben Nevis in Scotland.
Great Britain is one of the world’s leading industrialized nations. It has
achieved this position despite the lack of most raw materials needed for industry.
The country also must import about 40% of its food supplies. The largest
industries include machine tools; electric power, automation, and railroad
equipment; ships, motor vehicle, aircraft; electronic and communications
equipment; metals; chemicals; petroleum; coal; food processing; paper,
textiles, and clothing.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a constitutional monarchy. It means that the United Kingdom is governed by
hereditary sovereign (King or Queen), an elected House of Commons
and a partly hereditary House of Lords. The supreme legislative power is
vested in the Parliament, which seats for fi ve years unless sooner dissolved.
The Parliament has two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of
Commons. The executive power of the Crown is exercised by the Cabinet of
Ministers, headed by Prime Minister.

Wales is the largest of the peninsulas on the western side of Britain. It is
a country of hills and mountains deeply cut by river valleys. The mountains
cover practically all the territory of Wales and are called the Cambrian
Mountains. The highest peak, Snowdon (1,085 m) is in the north-west. The
lowland is confi ned to the relatively narrow coastal belt and the lower parts
of the river valleys.
In the south the Cambrian Mountains include an important coalfi eld, on
which an industrial area has grown. Two thirds of the total population live
in South Wales. Two relief divisions may be distinguished in South Wales:
a coastal plain which in the south-eastern part around Cardiff becomes up to
16 km wide and the upland areas of the coalfi eld proper, which rises between
245 and 380 metres. These divisions formed by the physical landscape are
clearly refl ected in the use of agricultural land. In the upland areas sheep are
the basis of the rural economy, and in the low-lying parts near the coast and
in the valleys dairy farming predominates. But in general South Wales is
dominated by the coalmining and heavy industries.

GRAMMAR
первое место: May I take it?
глагола (cannot – can’t; could not – couldn’t; must not – mustn’t; might
not – mightn’t; should not – shouldn’t; ought not to – oughtn’t to): He can’t
do it. He mustn’t go there.

think so.
Mary could play
tennis well.
Вместо can / could уместно употребление сочетания to be able
to. Оно употребляется как вместо can / could (I am able, she was
able и т.
My friends
will be able to translate this text.

My sister might

If Tom were here, he might show the magazine. –
употребляется не might, а сочетание to be allowed. John was allowed to work
there. Peter will be allowed
to speak with the President.
Must

smoke on board the plane.

Так как модальный глагол must употребляется только в настоящем времени, вместо него в других временах употребляется сочетание have to: My friend had to bring the newspaper.
