Gradually, over the centuries, geometric concepts became more generalized and people began to use geometry to solve more diffi cult, abstract problems. However, even though people in those times knew that certain relationships existed between things, they did not have a scientifi c means of proving how or why.
That changed during the Classical Period of the ancient Greek civilization (490–323 BC). Because the ancient Greeks were interested in philosophy and wanted to understand the world around them, they developed a system of logical thinking (or deduction) to help them discover the truth. This methodology resulted in the discovery of many important geometric theorems and principles and in the proving of other geometric principles that had been known by earlier civilizations. For example, the Greek mathematician Pythagoras was the fi rst person that we know of to have proved the theorem

Some of the most signifi cant Greek contributions occurred later, during the Hellenistic Period (323–31 BC). Euclid, a Greek living in Egypt, wrote Elements, in which, among other things, he defi ned basic geometric terms and stated fi ve basic axioms which could be deduced by logical reasoning.
These axioms, or postulates, were:
1. Two points determine a straight line.
2. A line segment extended infi nitely in both directions produces a
straight line.
3. A circle is determined by a centre and distance.
4. All right angles are equal to one another.
5. If a straight line intersecting two straight lines forms interior angles on the same side and those angles combined are less than 180 degrees, the two straight lines if continued, will intersect each other on that side. This is also referred to as the parallel postulate.
The type of geometry based on his ideas is called Euclidean geometry, a
type that we still know, use and study today.
With the decline of Greek civilization, there was little interest in geometry
until the 7
th
century AD, when Islamic mathematicians were active in the fi eld. Ibrahim ibn Sinan and Abu Sahl al-Quhi continued the work of the Greeks, while others used geometry to solve problems in other fi elds, such as optics, astronomy, timekeeping and mapmaking. Omar Khayyam’s comments on problems in Euclid’s work eventually led to the development of non-Euclidean geometry in the 19
th
century.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Europeans once again began to take an interest in geometry. They studied Greek and Islamic texts which had been forgotten about, and this led to important developments. Rene Descartes and Pierre de Fermat, each working alone, created analytic geometry, which made it possible to measure curved lines. Girard Desargues created

projective geometry, a system used by artists to plan the perspective of a painting.
In the 19
th
century, Carl Friedrich Gauss, Janos Bolyai and Nikolai Ivanovich Lobachevsky, each working alone, created non-Euclidean geometry. Their work infl uenced later researchers, including Albert Einstein.

Text B. Geometric Shapes
A geometric shape is defi ned as geometric information that still remains there even if scale, orientation, location and refl ection are displaced from a particular geometric object. We can say that if we move the shape, enlarge it, refl ect it or rotate it, then also the shape remains the same, i.e. it does not change into another.
The geometric shapes (generally seen in everyday life) are of two types: two-dimensional and three-dimensional. Generally the two-dimensional geometric shapes are represented by the lines joining the set of points called vertices in a bounded form. These are known as polygons including triangles,

quadrilaterals, etc. Some two-dimensional shapes are formed by bounded curves, for example, circle and ellipse.
Most of the three-dimensional geometric shapes are represented by the lines joining a set of points as well as two-dimensional surfaces containing those lines. For example, cubes, cuboids, pyramids, etc. Few three-dimensional shapes are formed by bounded curved surfaces, such as sphere and ellipsoid.
There are shapes having more than two or three dimensions, called multi­dimensional shapes. We have some shapes that are not in the bounded form, such as line segment, arc, curve.
Line segment is a part of line.
Curve is a smooth line representing some mathematical function.
Circle is the path of a point remaining at same distance from a fi xed point.
Triangle is a closed fi gure bounded by three lines.
Square is a shape with four straight sides of equal length and four corners
called right angles.
Rectangle is a shape with four straight sides and four angles of 90°.
Rhombus is a shape with four straight sides of equal length and angles
that are not 90°.
Parallelogram is a shape with four straight sides in which opposite sides are of equal length and are parallel to each other.
Trapezium is a shape with four straight sides, two of which are parallel.
Cube is a shape surrounded by 4 congruent squares.
Cylinder is a hollow or solid shape circular or oval base and straight sides
that are parallel.
Cone is a hollow or solid shape tapering from a circular base to a point outside the base.
Sphere is a 3D form of circle.
Pyramid is a shape with triangular or quadrilateral shaped based and slant
sides meeting in a point outside the base.

Text C. Crop Circles
Crop circles are strange patterns that appear mysteriously overnight in farmers’ fi elds, delight and intrigue among the press and public alike. The circles are mostly found in the United Kingdom, but have spread to dozens of countries around the world in past decades. The mystery has inspired countless books, blogs, fan groups, researchers and even Hollywood fi lms.
Despite having been studied for decades, the question remains: Who or what is making them?
Many people believe that crop circles have been reported for centuries, a claim repeated in many books and websites devoted to the mystery. Their primary piece of evidence is a woodcut from 1678 that appears to show a fi eld of oat stalks laid out in a circle. Some take this to be a fi rst-hand eyewitness account of a crop circle, but a little historical investigation shows otherwise.
Some claim that the fi rst crop circles appeared near the small town of Tully, Australia. In 1966, a farmer said he saw a fl ying saucer rise up from a swampy area and fl y away; when he went to investigate, he saw a roughly circular area of debris and apparently fl attened reeds and grass, which he assumed had been made by the alien spacecraft (but which police investigators said was likely caused by a natural phenomena such as a dust devil or waterspout). Referred in the press as “fl ying saucer nests”, this story is more a UFO report than a crop circle report.
In fact, the fi rst real crop circles didn’t appear until the 1970s, when simple circles began appearing in the English countryside. The number

and complexity of the circles increased dramatically, reaching a peak in the 1980s and 1990s when increasingly elaborate circles were produced, including those illustrating complex mathematical equations.
