  1. Тне proteins

2.1. Read and translate the text using a dictionary:

The proteins are necessary to all life, for the active protoplasm in the living ce11s and also the nucleus, which controls the activity of each се11, are chiefly protein. The reproductive parts of plants as we11 as the actively growing portions, such as the leaves contain the greatest part of the protein.

In animals not оn1у the protoplasm, but also the cell wa11s contain protein. Therefore, it forms the greater part of the muscles, the internal organs, the cartilages and connective tissues, and also such outer tissues as skin, hair, woo1, feathers, nails and horns.

Protein is one of chief constituents of the nervous system, and it even forms an important part of the bony skeleton, giving it elasticity. The proteins are among the most соmplex of all plant or animal compounds, each molecule probably containing many thousands of atoms.

2.2. Answer the following questions:

1. Why are proteins necessary to а11 life?

2. Can animals synthesize proteins?

3. Are proteins essential constituents of the protoplasm of а11 animal and vegetable ce11s?

4. What gives elasticity to the bony skeleton?

5. Ноw mаnу atoms does each mоlесulе of protein contain?

6. What substance dо the leaves contain?

7. What outer tissues dо уоu know?

    1. Find the Russian equivalents for: proteins, nucleus, leaves, cartilages, muscles, molecule, connective tissues, to give elasticity, reproductive parts, feather, bony skeleton, constituent, to form, outer tissues.

2.4. Are the following statements true or false? Correct the false statements:

1. All proteins contain nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. 2. Proteins are essential constituents of the mоlecule of all animal and vegetable cells. 3. The proteins of fish, meat and eggs are of unusually high nutritive value.4. The protein quality of corn is excellent and the content is low. 5. In mammals the principal end product of protein catabolism is urea which is soluble in water and toxic to the tissues in concentrated solution.

2.5. Read the text and give the main idea of the text:

Proteins are essential in everybody’s diet. They are known as building blocks of life. Proteins are complex substances found in many foods and are made up of thousands of small units called amino acids. There are 20 amino acids, divided into essential and non-essential amino acids.

Proteins are essential in the diet of animals for the growth and repair of tissue and can be obtained from foods such as meat, fish, eggs, milk, and legumes.

Proteins are necessary for the proper functioning of an organism. They perform a wide variety of activities in the cell. Proteins are major structural component of all body tissue, they are necessary for muscular growth and cellular repair. Proteins are also a functional component of enzymes, hormones and antibodies.

Proteins provide for the transport of nutrients, oxygen and waste throughout the body. They provide the structure and contracting capability of muscles. They also provide collagen to connective tissues of the body and to the tissues of the skin, hair and nails.
