Дэвид Ливингстон (1813–1873) – шотландский миссионер, врач и исследователь провел 30 лет, путешествуя в самые отдаленные части света. Начиная с путешествий от экватора до мыса Доброй Надежды и от Атлантического до Индийского океана – его жизнь была одним большим захватывающим приключением. Совершая пешие походы по Африке, Дэвид Ливингстон был первым европейцем, обнаружившим реку Замбези и водопад Виктория. Чувство патриотизма воодушевило исследователя назвать водопад в честь королевы Великобритании Виктории.
В благодарность за свой упорный труд Ливингстон завоевал всеобщую славу величайшего путешественника. Пробуждая интерес к столь отдаленным континентам, как Африка, исследования Дэвида Ливингстона воодушевили европейцев и послужили началом к колонизации материка в XIX веке. Более того, Ливингстон являлся вдохновителем африканского национализма, полагая, что африканский народ должен заявить о себе в международном значении.
Путешествие для самого знаменитого исследователя викторианской эпохи было как величайшим удовольствием, так и формой побега от гнетущей реальности того времени. Путешествуя по Африке, он стал свидетелем всех ужасов работорговли, это часто приводило его в уныние и заставляло чувствовать себя подавленным.
