I. Insert the verbs: to suggest, to ask, to answer, to say, to tell.

II. Without translating the whole sentence, give the English equivalents of the underlined verbs.

  2. Бухгалтер заметила, что если их фирма не осуществит платеж до 30 – го числа, то ставка возрастет, и они вынуждены будут выплатить больше.

III. Translate the dialogue into Russian and retell it in English.

Bogdanov: We’ve gone through the technical data and seen your Matrix 67 in operation. The machine seems good to us.

Smith: Yes, the machine is really good. Its capacity is much higher than the one of similar models and the finish is excellent.

Bogdanov: Yes, it is. Yet, the price, you are quoting, is rather high, could you revise it?

Smith: I’m afraid that will hardly be possible. I think you know that prices of raw materials have gone up lately. Yet, I’ll look into the matter and see what we can do. How many machines are you going to buy?

Bogdanov: If we agree on the price we could buy 6 machines for delivery in 3 lots. Could you guarantee prompt delivery of the first lot?

Smith: Well, we could ship them say…two months after the order is signed.

Bogdanov: That’s fine. I believe your terms of payment remain the same as under our previous contract, don’t they?

Smith: Yes, that’s right, there’s no change.

Bogdanov: What’s your guarantee period?

Smith: 24 months after dispatch. It goes without saying you should strictly observe our operation and maintenance instructions.

Bogdanov: No doubt, we shall.

Smith: Does not the guarantee apply to quick-wearing parts?

Bogdanov: Can we have a list of quick-wearing parts?

Smith: Yes, we sent it two days ago to you by separate mail, didn’t you receive it yesterday?

Bogdanov: I’ll contact my people, I think we got it. Thank you. I’d like to clear up one more point. It’s the export license.

Smith: Oh, that’ll be all right this time.

Bogdanov: Very good.

  5. The clerk said to the client,” You had exhausted your account by last Monday and now our bank has to sue your firm.”

  6. The Sellers said,” We are heavy with inquiries now and unfortunately, our firm doesn’t have practice of delivering on FOB terms. Nevertheless, if you increase your order by 10 machines, we’ll be able to give you a 5 % discount but we have to admit that the first lot will be shipped only after the tests in 3 weeks.”

  7. The Buyers wondered,” You will reconsider the period of guarantee, won’t you? Some of our constant clients demand the high quality of the goods and ask for the service during a longer period. Can’t we come to terms in this case?”

  1. Translate and restore the direct speech.

  1. The chief mentioned that the representative had already gone to be present at the tests and the latter would be to sign the test results only after there were no defects found.

  2. The bookkeeper wondered why the Buyers hadn’t opened a letter of credit as they had discussed it the month before and warned that they would have to refuse the deal if only their firm fulfilled their obligations according to the terms of payment of the contract.

  3. The clerk inquired if the client had any cards with him to prove his identity and what document the latter could present to confirm his solvency.

  4. The Buyers asked the Sellers if they had been eliminating the defects in the isolation when the representative of their firm had been in London and had been visiting the factory.

  5. The advertising agency admitted that they had been promoting those consumer goods for the previous 3 years by the time Mr Mc Konnor had become their chief.

  6. The manager declared that their firm had been improving the model since the previous week and unfortunately, it left to be desired.

  2. Управляющий добавил, что он сам займется вопросами поставки и отгрузки через 2 часа.

  3. Покупатель поинтересовался, предоставляет ли фирма скидку постоянным клиентам и в какой гарантийный срок они будут обслуживать эту машину.

  4. Продавец сообщил покупателю, что они отправили 1-ую партию еще 2 дня назад, но пока не получали подтверждение, что последние получили товар и поинтересовались, какое судно поставляет им груз последние 3 года и уверены ли они в сохранности продукции или стоит навести справки о последнем пункте остановки корабля.
