Population.
The totality of the individuals of one form, who possess the general gene pool (which is determined by the presence of free crossing) and who occupy the specific territory. In many instances the population can be structured into smaller units (subpopulations, families, etc.). The indices of total number and its dynamics, effective size, density are used for the characteristic of populations and so forth. Population is considered as the elementary unit of the process of microevolu-tion. Term "population" is proposed by V.Iogansen in 1903.
1903.
