Anikeeva Elena. Fundamentals of Indian Religiosity:
Dialectics of “Personal – Impersonal”/ Edited by N.S. Kirabaev. Moscow, Peoples` Friendship University of Russia,
2010.
S u m m a r y
Anikeeva Elena in her monograph considers the fundamentals of Indian
religions: Brāhmanic-Hindu tradition, Buddhism, Jainism in aspect of “Personal – Impersonal” as a dialectics. Indian philosophy, metaphysics of Indian religions analyzing under the categories ‘theism’, ‘pantheism’, ‘panentheism’ which are the best for expression the “Personal – Impersonal” relationships in any religiosity. The author takes Indian religiosity as a polytheist one in comparison with monotheism (Christianity). It is found that the basis of Indian religiosity is essentially impersonal-panentheistic in contrast to the absolute-theist basis of monotheism.
Indian theism – īçvara-vāda which belongs to polytheist religiosity
rooted in relative-functional conception of personality in contrast to absolutesubstantial conception of personality (these terms were suggested by Russian philosopher A.F.Losev). Indian theism neighbors upon the pan(en)theistic metaphysics and the Philosophy of Impersonal Absolute (Brahman, nirvāņa, etc.). On the contrary, the monotheistic metaphysics never admits any impersonal principle concerning God on the whole. Personal God in monotheism is an Absolute without any limitations, and some Impersonal Principle (mokşa/nirvāņa, etc.) is an Absolute without any limitations in polytheism. The dialectics of ‘Personal–Impersonal’ in mokşa/nirvāņa-centered Indian religiosity consists in this: its impersonal-pan(en)theist nuclear captures īçvaravāda into its orbit and makes tension with it in the field of debates between īçvara-vādins and nirīçvara-vādins. So that unity and struggle of contradictions in Indian religious metaphysics is unity and struggle between impersonalpan(en)theist axis and īçvara-vāda as its environment. The balance between them appeared to continue its stability though in dynamic form during the history of Indian philosophy. If there were too much of pan(en)theism and impersonal thinking in Indian metaphysics then some theistic teaching invaded into the scene, e.g. in late Mimānsa system (seçvara Mimānsa). And the abundance of theism produced the growing of non-theistic school, e.g. nirīçvara Sāmkhya.
