The infinitive as part of compound verbal modal predicate
modal verb + infinitive
Any form of infinitive can be used after modal verbs, e.g.
Look upstairs. She may be reading in her room now. (NPCA) = Посмотри наверху. Она, возможно, читает у себя в комнате. / Подивися нагорі. Вона, можливо, читає у себе в кімнаті.
You shouldn’t have left the child alone in the dark. (PA) = Тебе не следовало оставлять ребенка одного в парке. / Тобі не повинен був залишати дитину одну у парку.
I can’t do anything about this matter right now. We have to wait. (NPA) = Я ничего не могу сделать по этому поводу прямо сейчас. Нам придется подождать. / Я нічого не можу зробити із цього приводу прямо зараз. Нам доведеться почекати.
I’m dead tired. I must have been typing since morning. (PCA) = Я смертельно устала. Я, должно быть, печатала с самого утра. / Я смертельно утомилася. Я, мабуть, друкувала із самого ранку.
TASK 13. Define the form of the infinitive. Translate the sentences into your mother tongue.
You must have been dreaming of it long.
Sue ought to have told me the truth long ago.
Miss Davis should have been given this file in the morning.
Where is Ted? – No idea. Try the attic, he may be reading there as usual.
