Text 3. Omsk is the city where I study
Omsk is the second largest city in Siberia and the ninth city in Russia. Omsk
was founded in 1716. It is situated on the Irtysh River. In the past Omsk was a
small town with small population.
Its current population is about 1154000 citizens. The population of Omsk is
multinational. There are: Russians (over 80 %), Kazakhs (4,1 %), Ukrainians
(2,7 %), Germans (2,4 %), Tatars (2,2 %) and many others. The territory of Omsk is
about 567 square kilometers.
Omsk is a major industrial city and an important river port in Siberia and
Russia.
A fresh impetus for industries in Omsk was made by World War II, when
many industrial enterprises were evacuated from central and southern Russia. As a
result in the late 80s there were wood-working metal-working, machine building,
space and aircraft, tyre-making, instrument-making, textile, food, milk and meat
processing, carbon dioxide, corn-milling, airplane engine, TV and radio assembling,
oil-refining industries. Industrial regional centres Tаrа, Kalachinsk produce many
industrial products such as canned milk and meat, flour, carpets and rugs, agricultural implements and some other manufacturing items as well.
Omsk is a big transport centre now. There are many highways and surfaced
roads connecting Omsk with the nearest Siberian and Kazakhstan cities, towns and
townships. It is a railway station that connects European Russia with the Southern
territories and Eastern Siberia.
The Russian language is an official language spoken over the whole territory
of Siberia. There are lоcal native Siberian languages /and local dialects spoken
across the area.
As for the official Russian spoken in Siberia it is a heterogeneous one by its
nature because it is an alloy of many tongues and dialects and jargons of many
peoples who found themselves here.
The Siberian languages are a good example of language interference and
mutual influence of languages of various origin upon each other.

There are a lot of educational establishments in Omsk: there are 130
complete secondary schools, 19 gymnasiums and 13 lyceums, 28 special secondary schools, 1 nursing school.
Currently in Omsk there are more than ten state institutions of higher
education and a military higher school. Among them one could find Omsk State
University named after F.M. Dostoevsky (founded in 1974), Siberian State University of
Physical Education and Sport (founded in 1950), Omsk State Medical University
(founded in 1920) and others.
Many graduates from Siberian State University of Physical Education and
Sport glorify Omsk having become known all over the world: Galima Shugurova,
Irina Chashchina, Vladimir Barnashov, Alexander Karelin, Aleksei Tischenko and
others.
Omsk higher educational institutions supply their students with all kinds of
facilities like sport halls, hostels, canteens, libraries and some other ones. Some
students of state universities and institutes get a scholarship.
There are 14 theatres in current Omsk: the Drama Theatre, the Puppet
Theatre, the Youth and Children Theatre, the Fifth Theatre, the Lyubov
Yermolayeva Theatrical Studio, the Galerka Drama Theatre, the Musical Theatre,
the Lyceum theatre and others. The oldest is the Academic Drama Theatre that is
one of the oldest in Siberia.
Omsk is also a city of museums. А great variety of museums show that the
people of Omsk honour the memory of famous people that were born and lived in
Оmsk. Now there are: the Museum of Local history, Kondraty Belov housememorial museum, Liberov-centre, Literary museum after Dostoуevsky, the museum
of military glory, the Vrubel’s Museum and others.
The Omsk Region has its own sport traditions. One of them is regular countryside Olympiads. This tradition to hold sport tournaments in summer and in winter
is already over 35 years old. Beside these, since 1990 every first Saturday in
August the International Siberian Marathon and Road-Races take place. In addition
to professional sportsmen, Omsk is famed with its amateurs who are engaged in
aerobics, yoga, bodybuilding, swimming, speed-skating, jogging, arm-wrestling and
many other kinds of sport in sport clubs. Many ice hockey and football fans support
Omsk teams at the stadiums. They prefer it to watching the game on TV. Omsk is a
large cultural and sport centre in the Siberian region of Russia.
