Basketball has over 1 billion followers. It’s a major sport in USA with NBA
generating over $4.75 billion a year in revenue. Established Professional leagues in
Spain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, France, Argentina, China and more leagues getting
setup every year makes it the fastest growing sport in the world.
There will always be an argument which sport is the second most popular
behind Football? Well as far as last 10 years data about revenues from professional
league, TV contracts and general sport popularity is concerned Basketball has kind
of gain massive popularity outside of its home America. Basketball is fast becoming a
big sport in Canada, China, Spain, Philippines, Australia, Turkey, France, Germany and
some other minor European countries like Poland etc.
Tennis. A global reach and over a billion followers make Tennis the most
popular individual based sport. It comes up triumph in many of our criteria factors.
A truly universal game and unlike the other team sports listed above Tennis is
mainly an individual based game which is very popular across the world. Especially
its four biggest events called «Grand Slams» where top matches are often the most
watched sports matches every year. Unlike the other sports Tennis is equally
popular for men and women across the world. In fact Tennis is one of the rare sport
in the world which represent gender equality with same prize money for men and
women competitions.
Athletics is by far the most global sport of them all which include several
disciplines of course with Running, long jump and other track/field events. Athletics
is also the high point of Olympic Games as Athletics based sports are the most
watched during any Olympic event. Some of the iconic athletes have been gold
medalists in track and field sport and swimming. Current undisputed running/sprint
sport champion Usain Bolt was the most talked about athlete during 2012 Olympic
games in London and 2008 Olympics.
Rugby is a major sport in some of the most economical developed countries
like all four home nations of United Kingdom (England, Wales, Ireland and
Scotland) in souther hemisphere countries like Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa also boost huge popularity in Rugby.
Boxing. Only combat sport in the list, boxing is truly global just like Tennis
and Athletics. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have dominated the rich list
in last 10 years while boxing also boosts some of the greatest athletes to have ever
lived. Boxing is major sport in such countries as the USA, Mexico, Latin America,
111

the United Kingdom, Philippines, Japan, Russia and some eastern European
countries as Poland and Romania.
Ice hockey. By far the biggest winter sport in the world and although ice
hockey is popular or played in specific countries like Canada, Russia, USA,
Scandinavian countries like (Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden) some easten
european countries like Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic it can still boost huge
popularity specially during the world championships and european championships.
Volleyball. With no intricacies involved, volleyball is as simple as you like.
And probably it is the simplicity of this sport that makes it very popular with its fans.
On professional level, players with tall heights are preferred because of the extra
reach they have, so if your height is somewhere to the north of 6 feet, you should
fancy your chances in this sport.

Dialogue 1
Rob: Are you interested in sport, Pete?
Pete: Oh, yeah, I love football. I enjoy playing it and I like watching it on TV. I also
go to the gym to keep fit.
112

R: Well, I don't go in for sports. But I often watch sports on TV.
P: But you play volleyball very well, and you like volleyball, don't you?
R: That's right. I used to play volleyball at school, and I was very good at it. I was a
member of our school team. I also took up tennis at university, but I haven't played
it since I graduated. I just don't have time.
P: And what sports do you watch?
R: Of course, I often watch volleyball and tennis. I also like watching football, basketball and rugby, and I always watch the Olympic Games.
P: And do you go to the stadium – to watch matches, I mean?
R: Yes, I do, but not very often, maybe once or twice a year.
P: Oh, I adore watching football at the stadium – thousands of people are shouting
and singing, you can celebrate every goal with thousands of fans around you – I'm
just crazy about it!
R: Yeah, that's true. Listen, do you want to know why I asked you about sport?
Well, I'm going to take up running, and I want to know if you would like to join me.
P: And where and when are you going to run?
R: In the evening, after work. I don't know where, maybe at the park or at the stadium, I haven't decided yet. To tell the truth, it doesn't matter.
P: Well, I'm quite busy in the evenings – I play football on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday. By the way, why don't you join us?
R: I'm not good at football, you know.
P: But we really need a goalkeeper. You can jump very well, and you can catch the
ball, so you are the one we need!
R: OK, I'll think about it.
P: We play at the sports centre three days a week at 7 p.m., and we sometimes go
swimming after that. You'll like it!
Dialogue 2
Luke: What's your favourite sport, Maria?
Maria: Honestly speaking Luke, I'm not very sporty but I like swimming a lot.
L: Can you swim well?
M: Yes, certainly. I'm quite good at it. I also do some snorkeling and windsurfing.
L: I see. It sounds interesting. I also like swimming but my favourite sport is basketball.
M: That's obvious. You are rather tall.
113

L: Are there any sports that you don't do but like watching?
M: There are many such sport types. For example, I enjoy watching football, hockey, tennis, alpine skiing, biathlon, figure skating, bobsleigh and many others. And
what about you? Do you like watching sport events?
L: I certainly do. My favourite events are connected with soccer and curling.
M: By the way, I have no idea what the difference between football and soccer is.
L: I can explain. Basically these games are almost the same. They just have different names. The players form teams, wear a special uniform and try to score goals.
However, there are some minor differences, such as the shape of the ball. A soccer
ball is a sphere while a football is an ellipsoid. In soccer the players can't touch the
ball but in football they can.
M: What about curling? Is it a team game? And how is it played?
L: Curling is a team game. It is usually played in teams of four. The equipment includes stones and brooms. In this game players should try to slide stones across
the ice sheet towards the target area, which is called the house. The point of the
game is to slide the stone closer to the centre of the house. Each team has eight
stones.
Dialogue 3
Veronika: Hi, Betsy! Haven't seen you for ages. What have you been up to?
Betsy: Hi, Veronika! Nice to see you. I've been working on my home work. I have a
few tasks to do.
V: I see. Is there anything I can help you with?
B: In fact, yes. I need to write a short essay about my favourite type of sport and as
you know I'm not a sporty person at all. Perhaps, you could give me a hint on this
topic?
V: Sure. I've been figure-skating since childhood. If I was asked to write that kind of
essay, I'd definitely mention skating.
B: What's so special about this kind of sport?
V: I have always been fascinated by the athletes who could skate and dance freely
on the ice-rink. In my opinion, it's one of the most spectacular winter sports.
B: I agree. We also watch figure-skating each time there is a competition on.
V: Answering your previous question, I'd say that it feels great for me to be on the
ice-rink. Of course, it wasn't easy to learn how to skate properly, but I had a good
coach and lots of training.
114

B: I see. I need to mention some facts about the history of this sport as well. Do you

Text 2. Athletics
Track-and-field athletics is one of the most popular kinds of sports. It is a
sport in which athletes compete in running, walking, jumping and throwing events. It
is called track-and-field because the events are contested either on the track or on
the field of the stadium. Track-and-field athletics has a long history.
The first foot race probably took place thousands years ago, at the ancient
Olympic Games, held in Greece. Modern athletics began in the schools of England.
In 1864, Cambridge University competed against Oxford University in the first intervarsity athletics event.
118

Athletics meetings can be held indoors or outdoors. Outdoor running tracks
are oval in shape and measure 400 metres. Track events consist of running and
walking races of various distances.
Short-distance races, called sprints, are 100 metres, 200 metres and 400
metres. Middle-distance events are the 800 metres and 1500 metres. Long-distance
events are 5000 and 10000 metres. Marathon is a footrace of 42.2 kilometres.
Hurdle races are events in which the competitors run over obstacles called
hurdles. Hurdle races are 110 metres for men and 100 metres for women and 400
metres for both. Runners can knock over hurdles without penalty, but contact with a
hurdle normally slows down the runner.
Steeplechase is a test of middle-distance running, endurance and hurdling
skill. The steeplechase is a race usually of 3,000 metres, over two kinds of obstacles, hurdles and water jumps. It is contested both by men and women.
Walking races are events in which athletes must follow certain rules of walking technique: the front foot must touch the ground before the rear foot leaves the
ground. While the foot is touching the ground, the leg must be unbent. The judges
have to caution once and than disqualify a competitor who is not walking within the
definition. The standard walking events are the 20 km road walks for women; 20 km
and 50 km for men.
Field events are contests in jumping and throwing. Most field events take
place in an area enclosed by the track. The field includes runways for the jumping
events and special circular areas for most of the throwing events. The jumps are
the long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault. In the long jump and triple
jump, athletes jump as far forward as they can. The long jump is competed in a
single jump into apit filled with sand. The triple jump consists of three continuous
jumps, the first two completed on the runway. A jump’s length is measured from the
front edge of the take-off board to the nearest mark the athlete makes in the sand. If
the athlete steps past the board before jumping, the jump is a foul. In high jumping
and pole vaulting athletes try topropel themselves over a long thin crossbar heldup
by two posts called uprights. If a jumper knocks the crossbar off the uprights, the
jump counts as a miss.
A pole vaulter uses a long pole usually made of fiber glass. The pole first
bends, than straightens, helping the athlete to cover the height about 5 meters.
The throwing events are the discus, hammer, javelin, and shot-put. Throwing
events require athletes to propel an object as far as they can. Competitors in the
119

discus, hammer, and shot put all throw from inside a circle surrounded by a protective enclosure, called a «cage». In the javelin event, the athlete runs down a runway
marked on the field and throws the javelin before reaching a foul line. In each event,
the thrown object must land within a marked area.
The decathlon and heptathlon are combined competitions, in which athletes
compete in several different events, receiving a score for their performance in each
event. The winner is the athlete who receives the highest total score. The decathlon
is a 10-event competition for men. The heptathlon is a seven-event competition for
women.
