Ex. 6. Read the dialogues. Roleplay them.
Dialogue 1
Timothy: Kate, how do you normally spend your evenings? Gabriella: I’ve joined the gym here, so I go and exercise and go for a swim. T: Swim. How long do you stay each time? G: About 2 hours. T: Wow. So what do you do during those two hours? G: So we go to the gym for about an hour and then have a swim for half an hour and then sauna for about ten minutes and then finish off with a massage. T: Really, a massaging chair? G: A massaging chair! T: Wonderful, and so who do you go with? G: I go with Nicola. T: And Nicola is? G: She’s another teacher and she’s who I live with, so. T: Alright. Now when you’re in the gym, do you do weights? Do you do cardio? Aerobics? Running? Walking? G: We do everything really. Aerobics and weights. T: Aerobics and weights are the best. G: The gyms here are much better than back home. T: Oh, yeah. What’s the biggest difference?
G: They have games on the machines so if you’re cycling, you’re also playing a
game where you have to blow up the other cyclists so it makes it a bit more interesting than just exercising. T: Uh-huh! So it passes the time by. Yeah, lot quicker. And then why are you exercising? Do you have a certain reason, a goal in mind? G: Yeah, because I put on a lot of weight when I was in Australia because I was eating too much pizza and, good breakfast, and drinking far too much beer. T: So you just want to shed those extra pounds. G: Yeah, that I put on and get back to the original weight that I was. T: Well, good luck to you. G: Thank you.

Dialogue 2 Patient: May I see Doctor Smith, the the rapeutist? Clerk: Doctor Smith is not receiving just now. You can see Doctor Johnson. P.: Where does he see his patients? C.: Room 20. The second floor to the right. P.: Thank you. P.: Are you waiting for Doctor Johnson? P. 2nd.: No, there are only two of us to Johnson.
P.: Is he a good specialist? I’ve never visited him before. P. 2nd.: Oh, yes, he’s quite an experienced doctor, I should say. He exa mines patients thoroughly. I’ve been… Oh, here comes the patient. It’s my turn now. Ex-
cuse me. In the consulting room Patient.: Good morning, doctor. Doctor.: Morning. What is wrong with you?
P.: I’m awfully sick, doctor. All night I’d been having an awful pain in the stomach. D.: Why didn’t you call in a doctor?
P.: Well, it had subsided a little in the morning so I thought I might come myself. D.: Where does it pain you? P.: Here, doctor. D.: Strip to the waist, please, and lie down on the couch. D.: Which side did you say the pain was on? P.: Right here, doctor. D.: Any rigidity here? P.: I don’t feel any. D.: Here? P.: Oh, yes. D.: What have you been eating of late? P.: Well, I think everything that I’ve always been used to – meat, cabbage and so on. D.: Does this often happen with you? P.: Not that I remember, doctor. D.: Seems you will have to be operated on for appendisitis.
P.: Yes? I’m rather scared, doctor. D.: You needn’t be. Stand up and let me check your heart and blood pressure.
P.: Is it all right, doctor?
122
D.: Yes, and your blood pressure is almost normal too. Put this under your armpit. A slight temperature. You may dress now. Well, here is an admittance to the hospital. Goodbye.

Text 3. Weightlifting
The barbell is placed horizontally in front of the lifter’s legs. It is gripped,
palms downwards and pulled in a single movement from the platform to the full extent of both arms above the head, while either splitting or bending the legs. During this continuous movement, the barbell may slide along the thighs and the lap. No part of the body other than the feet may touch the platform during the execution of the lift. The weight, which has been lifted, must be maintained in the final motionless position, arms and legs extended, the feet on the same line, until the Referees give the signal to replace the barbell on the platform.
The lifter may recover in his own time, either from a split or a squat position, and finish with the feet on the same line, parallel to the plane of the trunk and the barbell.
The Referees give the signal to lower the barbell as soon as the lifter becomes motionless in all parts of the body. The Clean and Jerk. The first part, the Clean. The barbell is placed horizontally in front of the lifter’s legs.
It is gripped, palms downwards and pulled in a single movement from the platform to the shoulders, while either splitting or bending the legs. During this continuous movement, the barbell may slide along the thighs and the lap. The barbell must not touch the chest before the final position. It then rests on the clavicles or on the chest above the nipples or on the arms fully bent.
The feet return to the same line, legs straight before performing the Jerk. The lifter may make this recovery in his own time and finish with the feet on the same line, parallel to the plane of the trunk and the barbell. The second part, the Jerk. The athlete bends the legs and extends them as well as the arms to bring the barbell to the full stretch of the arms vertically extended. He or she returns the feet to the same line; arms and legs fully extended, and waits for the Referees’
125
signal to replace the barbell on the platform. The Referees give the signal to lower the barbell as soon as the lifter becomes motionless in all parts of the body.
Important remark
After the Clean and before the Jerk, the lifter may adjust the position of the barbell. This must not lead to confusion. It does not mean the granting of an additional jerk attempt but allowing the lifter to: a) withdraw the thumbs or «unhook» if this method is used, b) lower the barbell in order to let it rest on the shoulders if the barbell is placed too high and impedes the breathing or causes pain, c) change the width of the grip.
