1. Among many famous athletes of
Belarus I’d like to speak about Olga
Korbut who has been called many
things, including the “first of the
pixies”, “a circus act” and “the
queen of gymnastics”.
2. Despite a wide range of opinions about her, the fact is that Olga
Korbut changed women’s gymnastics forever.
3. Olga was born on May 6
th
, 1955
in Grodno, Belarus.
4. She had not been a strong student at school, but her teacher noticed her agility during physical exercises and recommended that she
enroll in one of the gymnastics
schools run by the State Sport
Committee.
5. At the age of 11, Korbut began
her gymnastics training at such
school in Grodno.
6. Unlike her grim-faced teammates, she burst upon the 1972
Olympics with a dazzling smile, a
youthful enthusiasm, and an exuberant presence that was unprecedented
in Soviet athletes.
7. Her joy of life along with her
astonishing gymnastic skills took the
Olympics by storm.

but Olga was not considered one of
the stars and was unknown in the West.

made two errors on the uneven parallel bars made for great TV and
endeared her to millions of viewers.
10. Olga went on to win two individual gold medals in the ’72 Olympics and one silver.
11. Following the Olympics, the
Soviet team toured the U.S., and
crowds turned out in record numbers
to see the sports world’s newest star.
12. Olga quickly became a household name and the world’s most
popular female sports performer.

of 1972, and “Sports Illustrated”
featured her on the cover of the
magazine’s March 1973 issue.

Read the text.
MEW AND EDNA
§ 1. Edna was a big, respectable looking woman, always in the supermarket. At least she seemed to be in the supermarket whenever Mew was there,
which was at least three times a week. Mew lived alone and didn’t see many
people except out shopping. The supermarket seemed to keep her in touch.
She didn’t have a great need of food. A pot of marmalade lasted a month, and
she did wish she could buy butter in less than half pounds because butter goes
off even in a fridge, being so old by the time it gets to the shop.

§ 2. Mew was fussy
the fruit, as still as a stone amidst the women hurtling
trolleys and children dangling their legs from the front of the baskets like
hanging plants. It was standing in front of the fruit that Edna first spoke to
her, just as Mew had picked up a peach.
§ 3. ‘You’re not meant to touch the peaches,’ said large Edna, looking
down severely
‘I was just smelling it,’ said Mew, rather frightened and not quite truthful
because she had in fact been touching it, too, and had been about to put it
against her face to touch it the more.
§ 4. ‘It’s not hygienic,’ said Edna. ‘It’s the way colds get passed. You’ll
have to buy it now. Won’t she?’ she asked an assistant, flapping by
clip-board.
‘You what?’
‘She’ll have to buy the peach. She touched it.’
§ 5. The young man looked at Edna’s big firm face with its mouth pulled
up into a confident tight bunch. Her hair was neatly permed. Little Mew
looked thin and scared. It was not easy to look severely at Mew, but it was
easier than looking severely at alarming Edna. ‘Yes, you will,’ he said, ‘if
you’ve got it our of the blue paper, you will.’ And he flapped off.
§ 6. ‘I was going to buy it anyway,‘ said Mew.
Edna gave her an approving nod, and when Mew moved off, she moved
off with her, pausing now and then to touch Mew’s arm and point to special
offers. At the check-out Mew was surprised to find that she had bought several things she didn’t really want at all, like condensed milk.
§ 7. ‘I can’t think what I’m doing with condensed milk,’ she said, as she
walked out with Edna. ‘I couldn’t stomach
‘It’s amazing what you stomach if you have to. It depends what sort of a

‘Yes, so did I …’ Mew began.
Ignoring her, Edna added, ‘I lost everything – family, property, possessions: no compensation. They lost all my records.’
§ 8. ‘Records?’ For a moment Mew thought of a young, romantic edition
of this solid, strong-charactered woman searching tearfully among ashes for
Bach and Mozart, or for Vera Lynn.
‘My identity papers. Even my birth certificate they lost.’ said Edna. ‘I
don’t even get the pension.’
