UNIT 14
THE UK CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
Section 1: TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION
THE UK CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS
1. You know, customs and traditions is not an easy thing to describe.
2. One needs to know the history of a particular country and its people as well as all the factors that have led to this or that folk custom.
3. This is all true in case of Great Britain, where traditions have been cherished and kept for centuries.
4. While preparing to speak on this topic, I read a lot of sources, but the most valuable one, in my opinion, is “A Dictionary of British Folk Customs.”
5. On the basis of the materials studied, I would classify customs and traditions as those having a religious background (both Pagan and Christian) and purely folk ones, which characterize a certain life style.
6. I should also point out that some of the customs are observed in a certain area and are not common for the whole country.
7. Some church holidays like Christmas, Boxing Day and Easter are celebrated as national ones, while others are observed but are not days off.
132
8. For example, Midsummer Night – June 24
th
– is the Feast of Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and is similar to our Kupalle, with the same bonfires and throwing flower wreaths into water on Midsummer Eve.
9. Halloween is celebrated on October 31
st
– the eve of All Saints Day.
10. From times immemorial, this has been a day associated with ghosts and spirits and with death.
11. This is in fact a legacy of Pagans – so again fires are burnt to destroy witches, and children especially enjoy it for the “trick or treat” ceremony when they knock on the doors asking for sweets and candies.
12. Each season has its own traditional holidays – for example, on May 13
th
, which is Old May Day, they celebrate Garland Day in Abbotsbury, Dorset.
13. Children carry flower garlands on short poles about this village as luck-bringers to the householders and receive gifts of a penny in return.
14. At the end of the day the money is shared, and the garlands are laid round the War Memorial.
15. In autumn, to be more exact, on November 5
th
, Guy Fawkes’ [0gaω
0fΥ]:ks] Day is marked.
16. It’s the anniversary of the dis- covery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, when Guy Fawkes was arrested.
133
17. One of the rhymes is traditionally chanted by children: “Remember,
remember the Fifth of November // Gunpowder Treason and Plot // I see no reason // why Gunpowder Treason // Should ever be forgot.”
18. Some English customs have become international – among them is April Fool’s Day, the first day of April.
19. Practical jokes are very popular on that day, and most of the tricks are far from being original, they have become traditional.
20. One of them is to tell someone that his shoelace is undone or that something is wrong with his clothing when in fact all is in order.
21. One of the easiest tricks was played in late 17
th
century, when people were invited to see the lions washed at the Tower of London.
22. But on the stroke of 12 noon all tricks end, and if anyone attempts a trick after twelve, the intended victim says: “April Fool’s gone past // You’re the biggest fool at last.”
23. The list of customs and traditions of the British Isles is very long, and I could talk and talk about them.
24. What I’d like to say in conclusion is that people are very proud of them and observe them with great love and care.
25. They never forget that Britain is Great and keep up their traditions.

Section 2: TEXT FOR COMPREHENSION
TASK 1
Read the text.
The following passage is about violence. It was written by Buster B., a
member of the rock group “Bad Manners”.
§ 1. As a group, Bad Manners are totally against violence. It really upsets
me even to talk about it. I don’t like to hear about all the violence on the streets, and if we’re confronted with violence when we play somewhere, we really hate it.
§ 2. But at the same time, I can understand why a lot of young people do
go out and get themselves into fights and all sorts of trouble. Times are pretty rough
for kids; there’s a lot of unemployment, and many of them don’t agree
with our government on this point, so they want to rebel
– and fighting’s just
one way of doing it.
§ 3. I think the newspapers and television can do a lot of harm. I’m con-
vinced that there is more and more violence only because it gets on television and in the national press. For instance, when there’s a fight at one of our shows, it gets more attention in the press than the rest of the tour put together.
136
§ 4. There’s also a lot of talk about violence on television: how it influ-
ences children and how it should be stopped. But television companies don’t work that way. They decide what people most want to see (which is very often violence), and show it.
§ 5. I think that among our younger fans, we as a group are able to set an
example. If we ever see trouble among our audience
, we just walk off and refuse to come back until it has stopped. We’ve never done anything violent at our shows (or anywhere else), and it helps.
§ 6. A change in the attitude of the police could help to keep violence down, too. They do an important job, but they should be more willing to help people and understand their problems rather than just going at people and locking
them away. It makes people feel bitter and angry, and they are likely
to do the same again.
§ 7. Violence does need to be kept down, but some people want to go about doing that in the wrong way. They want violent people to be punished harder and to give police more power. Prison doesn’t help at all; if anything, it hardens people.
§ 8. Of course everyone feels angry and aggressive at times, but there are better ways of getting rid of these feelings than by violence. Sport is a really good outlet
. Instead of going out and hitting someone, young people could,
for example, throw a cricket ball around.
§ 9. But the most important thing is to think positively. It may sound silly, but I think that if people looked on the bright side a bit more, the world would be a more peaceful place, and violence might become a thing of the past.
