Bykov an impulse for creating numerous war novels – “The Alpine
Ballad”, “Sotnikov”, “Kruglyanski
Bridge”, “The Sign of Trouble”, “The
Dead Feel No Pain” and many others.

wrote not only about heroism, but
cowardice and treason as well.

without the schemes that were imposed by the Soviet ideology.
16. The main criterion of Bykov’s
creative activity has always been
honesty to himself and his readers.

demand, but it doesn’t mean that they
always had the “green light” for publication.
18. In fact, most of his books were
subject to censorship, and the situation in the late 90-ies turned even
worse for the author who – without
exaggeration – is world-known.
19. But I strongly believe that censors come and go, and people like
Vasil Bykov belong to those who are
indeed part of the nation’s cultural
heritage.
20. As far as I know, Bykov was a
couple of times nominated for the
Nobel Prize in literature, which is
already a fact to be proud of.
21. A few years ago Bykov became
a prize-winner of the Russian prestigious award “Triumph”.
22. The conscience of the nation –
this is what great personalities like
Bykov are called, which is fair
enough.
23. Too bad, some people make their
judgements about Vasil Bykov without reading his books – either those
written in the past or the recent ones.
24. But I have all reasons to state
that we can be proud of this outstanding author and person for his
contribution to the national and world
literature and for adding so much to
the creation of a positive image of
Belarus.

Section 2: TEXT FOR COMPREHENSION
TASK 1
Read the text.
§ 1. Charles Dickens lives. Or so one might think on visiting Broadstairs
in Kent during the month of June. The unsuspecting visitor may bump into Mr
Pickwick* or Mr Dombey* or even find the sinister
Fagin* lurking in the
shadows. [* characters from Dickens’ books] Many people think there is a
TV crew at work or that the town has a high proportion of eccentrics, but
when they realize that they are in the midst of the annual Dickens Festival,
they usually enter the spirit of the occasion.
§ 2. Every year, the third week of June sees the high point for the Broadstairs branch of the Dickens Fellowship, for it is then that the members put on
their costumes and for short while live the parts of Dickens’ characters. These
enthusiasts walk the streets of this delightful little seaside town in the leisurely fashion of the mid-nineteenth century, stopping to converse in the courteous manner.

§ 3. Broadstairs was, in Dickens’ own words, ‘our favourite watering
place’, and it was here that he came with his family to escape the noise and
dirt of the London of his day. He loved the peacefulness and used to take long
walks breathing the clean sea air. His writings show that he was extremely
fond of the place, and he only stopped his visits when it became very popular
and the noise of musicians in the streets interfered with his work.
§ 4. Broadstairs today is, of course, quite different from what it was in
Dickens’ time, although the harbour is still dominated by the rather formidable looking Bleak House. This began as a much smaller affair called Fort
House, and contrary to local belief Dickens spent very little time there, and it
has no connection at all with the novel of the same name. I do feel, however,
that it was real fondness
for the writer’s memory which prompted the change
of name.
§ 5. The Dickens Fellowship was founded in 1902 and has over sixty
branches throughout the world, the majority of these being in the United
Kingdom. The Broadstairs branch was not founded until 1937, but it is the
only one in the world to celebrate with an annual festival in costume. The
event takes place in the gardens of Pierremont Hall.
§ 6. I spoke to Miss Joyce Smith, the local organiser, and she told me that
about 250 people are involved in putting on the festival, all giving freely of
their time to make this colourful event a success.
§ 7. The people involved have a real feeling for the Dickensian flavour of
the festival, and it all adds colour and gaiety to this seaside resort. Long may
Dickens live.
