17. For example, I attended the meetings of the club on social and economic problems where we were encouraged to compare and analyze the current situation in Belarus and the neighbouring countries.
18. We also had interesting parties held at our school.

22. I’m sure those who finished our school have a lot to share with the present school students and tell them about their accomplishments.

24. I’m sure it’s to the benefit of all – former and present students as well as teachers.

Section 2: TEXT FOR COMPREHENSION
TASK 1
Read the text.
ALL ALONE IN LONDON
§ 1. The offices of the Piccadilly Advice Centre in a Soho side street are
a sober
contrast to the bright yellow lights of the casino opposite. Last week Lisa Powell, one the Centre’s workers, did not like to talk about the Centre’s activities: she objects
to the worn-out image of the runaway from a broken home, which is quite different from the young people she deals with. ‘The greater majority come from stable backgrounds and is seriously looking for work,’ she says. ‘The problem is that they are unrealistic about it. They expect to find a job with a good wage and to get cheap accommodation
without
any trouble.’
§ 2. The Centre was visited by one youngster who wanted to be directed to the steelworks that was nearest to Piccadilly Circus, and another wanted a flat on the King’s Road for £10 a week. It deals with 900 inquiries a month, a third of them from people wanting accommodation for the same night. Many of the young people come from the depressed areas of Scotland and northwest England, some with the encouragement of their parents who believe they stand a better chance of work in London.
§ 3. The problems the youngsters suffer from are simply those of poverty, says Powell. Even if they arrive in London well dressed, day of wandering round the streets looking for work take their toll. Once their appearance becomes untidy, their chances of work decrease even further. They begin to suffer from poor health – bronchitis and sores from sleeping rough – and hanging round the streets increases their chances of picking up a criminal record.
§ 4. There are few figures to illustrate the scale of the problems of homelessness in London. But a count carried out in the Strand underpass one night last winter revealed 150 people sleeping rough in that one spot alone. Information gathered by the Campaign for Homeless and Rootless (CHAR) suggests that as many as ten thousand people sleep in small bed-and-breakfast hotels and emergency night shelters.
38
§ 5. CHAR’s director, Chris Holmes, says the public’s picture of the homeless drifter is often wrong. Two in five have had job training, he says, and have educational qualifications. Homelessness weakens their defences, however, and adds another burden to their problems, such as a criminal record.
