9. I remember well one of my last
visits to the theatre which was in
November during the autumn break
at school.
10. Our teacher of the Belarusian
language had bought tickets for
Yanka Kupala’s play “Tuteyshiya”
(“The Locals”).
11. As our teacher explained to us,
this play had a lot of implications,
and one of the issues about it was
that it helped to develop a sense of
identity, which perhaps is the weakest point in the mentality of Belarusians.
12. My classmates and I had arrived
at the theatre about twenty minutes
before the performance started.
13. We left our jackets in the cloakroom and some of us bought the
programme to see the cast.
14. Then we found our seats which
were in the ninth row of the pit.
15. As the play was very popular
with the public, the house was full,
and I think there were no vacant
seats in the boxes, the dress-circle,
and the balcony.
16. The performance began at 7
PM, and from the very first minute I
was deeply impressed by everything
I saw on the stage.
17. I must point out that the setting
was splendid and the acting was
really talented.

comedies, and there are a lot of
funny and true-to-life scenes in it.
19. We laughed heartily at the adventures of the main character who,
depending on the situation, changed
his surname from Russian Znosilov
to Belarusian Znosak and Polish
Znosilowski.
20. When watching the play, I
couldn’t help thinking about the
attitude of our people to the Belarusian history and their language.
21. Yanka Kupala’s point was very
clear and simple in his desire to
make people remember their roots.
22. This performance helped me to
better understand that Belarus deserves a better life and we really
must be aware of our history.
23. It won’t be an exaggeration to
say that all of us have enjoyed every
minute of the performance, so no
wonder it was accompanied by
hearty applause over and over again.
24. In conclusion I want to emphasize that the role of theatre is not
diminished with the progress of science and technology.
25. What is important, in my opinion, is that in the theatre you are part
of the action and honest to yourself.

personality and makes us realize
what life is about.

TASK 1
Read the text.
§ 1. Faced with the miserable
prospect of being unemployed, Pamela
Dudley and Susan McAdam decided to do something positive to help themselves. And so now they are both working – at the same job. Pamela, 17, and
Susan, 18, do exactly the same job, but they each work only half a week. ‘The
job description is clerk typist,’ Susan told me, ‘and it’s mostly typing and
filing, so it can easily be shared. I work all day on Monday and Tuesday, and
Wednesday mornings, and Pamela works the rest of the week. We meet for
about an hour on Wednesday to pass on messages. Apart from that, we don’t
get much time together at work and just see each other socially.’
§ 2. ‘It makes you feel very close when you share a job,’ Pamela explains. ‘You have the same sense of pride in your work and know all about
the pressures and what can go wrong.’
§ 3. And what if something does go wrong? Isn’t there a chance of blaming each other? ‘Of course not,’ Pamela was quite confident. ‘We know that
we would always admit to our own mistakes. I know that I would never leave
Susan with a huge pile of unfinished work or a bad mistake to set right.
§ 4. It’s in our best interests to make our job work. It is a fairly new idea
and has come up against a lot of criticism. There will undoubtedly be a few
things that go wrong, but we are both sensible and can sort them out.’

§ 5. As Susan explained, the working hours are reasonably flexible
. ‘If
I’m sick one day or want to take a day’s holiday, then I can arrange things
with Pamela and we can swap working days.’
§ 6. One of the biggest hurdles
to overcome is that they each get only get
half a salary. ‘But at least it’s better than the money we would get on social
security,’ Pamela was quick to point out. ‘Moreover, it’s so much nicer than
sitting at home all day feeling bored. Even half a job is better than no job at
all. I can see a great future in job-sharing. I think that it’s the ideal way to
beat unemployment.
§ 7. ‘But,’ Susan interrupted, ‘it’s no good trying to share a job unless
you are prepared to trust your partner and agree to work together. Job-sharing
really does mean sharing.’

1. You know, talking about my
favourite writer is not an easy thing
for me.
2. The thing is that I’ve got quite a
few authors that I would call my favourite ones.
3. Among the Russian authors I
would name Chekhov, Bulgakov, and
Platonov; among the Belarusian ones –
Adamovich, Bryl, Bykov, and Korotkevich; and among foreign writers I
would single out Thomas Mann,
O’Henry, and Graham Greene.
4. So, again, it’s quite difficult for
me to focus on just one of them, but
since number one priority for me is
honesty, I’ll try to speak about a very
honest author – Vasil Bykov.
5. Bykov was born not far from
Ushachi, Vitebsk region, and was
quite young when he went to war.
6. His family was, by mistake, informed about his death, but the fact
was that he was just badly wounded
and had to spend some time in hospital.
