UNIT 15
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Section 1: TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
1. I’m Dima T., and I’d like to tell
you about the United States of
America, one of the most interesting
countries in the world, in my opinion.
2. First I’ll give some general
information on the USA, then I’ll
talk about that country as a melting
pot of many ethnic groups and what
brought them across the ocean, and
finally I’ll try to present America as
the leading advanced economy in
the world.
3. The United States is one of the
largest countries in the world with
the area of about 3 million squire
miles and the population of over
280 million people.
4. The USA borders on Canada in
the North and Mexico in the South;
it also has a border with Russia,
where Alaska is separated from
Kamchatka by the Straight of Bering.
5. The country is washed by the
Atlantic Ocean in the East and the
Pacific Ocean in the West.
6. In the past, the USA was one of
the British colonies, and after the
War of Independence it was proclaimed an independent country on
th
July 4
, 1776.
141

7. At that time, there were thirteen
states there called New England,
that’s why there are thirteen stripes
on the U.S. national flag.
8. At present the USA includes
fifty states which are represented on
the flag by fifty stars, so the nickname of the U.S. flag is “Stars and
Stripes”.
9. The capital of the country is
Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia), and the largest cities are
New York, Los Angeles, Detroit,
and Chicago.
10. By the way, Detroit (in the state
of Michigan) is one of the twintowns or, using American English,
sister-cities of Minsk.
11. The reason for these two cities
to have close cooperation and contacts is their being machine building
and automobile industry centres.
12. A very interesting thing about
the United States is that people from
many countries came there hoping
to find a better life.
13. That’s why the name “melting
pot” was very precise when we
talked about the numerous ethnic
groups that inhabit the USA.
14. Now it’s more correct to call
them “fruit salad”, i.e. these groups
need to preserve their original culture.
15. Being proud of its democratic
accomplishments, the USA is very
protective of human rights and does
not tolerate inter-ethnic antagonism.
16. The terrorist attack of Septem-
th
ber 11
2001 against the USA in
New York and Washington, D.C. made
it clear that fighting terrorism has
united all the democracies in the world.
-
142

17. The USA is a very diverse
country with a number of climatic
and time zones.
18. The U.S. economy is the one of
the most advanced in the world.
19. Most of the companies in the
country are small and medium-size
businesses, but of course most people are employed in big companies
like General Motors, Ford, General
Electric, IBM, Microsoft and so on.
20. The leading U.S. parties are the
Republican and the Democratic,
whose symbols traditionally are an
elephant and a donkey, respectively.
21. Presidential elections are held
once in four years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday of November of a leap year.
22. I’d like to conclude by saying
that the so called American dream is
quite a realistic thing to achieve
judging by millions of people living
in their own houses with a green
lawn in front.
23. Of course, it’s a bit simplified
approach, but on the other hand,
there are all reasons to call America
a country of opportunities.
24. It does not mean that the USA
has no problems of any kind, but it’s
important to know that there is a
system that is able to help solve
those problems.
143

Section 2: TEXT FOR COMPREHENSION
TASK 1
Read the text.
§ 1. Throughout the year, the advertisements scream from the pages of
the teenage, educational and women’s magazines all across America – ‘Lost:
8,000 pounds each summer … Boys, YOU can lose 20 to 50 pounds while
having the time of your life …’ ‘SLIM-DOWN camps for girls. Be reeducated in your eating habits.’
§ 2. In the States, perhaps the richest society the world has ever known,
people eat more than anywhere else. In a population of just over 290 million,
about 80 million are overweight. And, surrounded as they are by hot dogs,
hamburgers, popcorn and ice creams, the kids do not escape. They are the
fattest on the face of the earth – and at a price.
§ 3. For their summer holidays, thousands of tubby kids pack their bags
for one of the dozens of American ‘fat camps’, where their parents pay a lot
of money for them to be flattered
, persuaded and criticized.
§ 4. It is very successful, at least in the short term. Dozens of fat camps
boast weight losses of between two and three-and-a-half stone [1 stone = 6.35
kg] by their kids. It also helps them psychologically.
145

§ 5. Says one counselor of a slim-down camp: ‘The kids arrive sort of
hang-dog
, really pretty miserable. For years they’ve been called ‘Fats’ or
‘Blimp’ or ‘Hulk’, and that puts them off enjoying life. But we see a change.
They’ve been odd man out for so long, and here they aren’t.’
§ 6. Camp Kingsmount, set in the Berkshire Hills in the heart of Massa-
chusetts, is one of the most stunningly
successful slim-down camps. Englishman Tom Parr, a 61-year-old from West Kirby, Cheshire, flies over each year
to run the 8-week programme, which more than 300 fat kids take part in.
§ 7. Says Parr: ‘The typical weight loss per person throughout the camp
is three-and-a-half stone. But in one special case, we removed just under six
stone in the eight weeks.’
§ 8. He admits, however, that the camp is an artificial environment.
‘That’s one of the strongest criticisms. Only about a third of the kids won’t be
back next year. But the ones who keep coming back aren’t all lost. Everything
they learn here isn’t wasted. We teach them a lot about nutrition, about which
foods just balloon up the weight. We hope they’ll never forget it.’
§ 9. Once they leave the slim-down camps, the temptation
to return to
bad eating habits is strong. For there are fast-food stores on just about every
corner of every block in America. And most American kids have a lot of
pocket money.
§ 10. At the camps, the kids go straight on to a well-balanced, sound
1,200 calories a day with no snacks in between. To help them forget about
their rumbling tummies, the kids are kept busy with exercise and outdoor activities in the mountainous countryside where these camps usually are.
§ 11. ‘You have to keep them going every minute of the day,’ says Tom
Parr. ‘The whole experience has to be highly structured. If you keep them
busy all the time, they don’t sit and sulk
about how hungry they are.’

UNIT 16
WASHINGTON, D.C. AND NEW YORK CITY
Section 1: TOPIC FOR DISCUSSION
WASHINGTON, D.C. AND NEW YORK CITY
1. Hello, I’m Tamara S., and I’ll
talk about the U.S. capital Washington, D.C. and the largest city in America New York, often called the capital
of the world for hosting the United
Nations Organization.
2. When I was studying numerous
sources trying to find some information about the U.S. cities, I was surprised that the capitals of the American states are not at all big cities, for
example, Sacramento in California or
Austin in Texas.
3. The same concerns the U.S. capital Washington, D.C. [District of Columbia], named after the first U.S.
President George Washington, which
is not the largest city of the country.
4. It stands on the river Potomac
and is more to the South than Tashkent, Uzbekistan – another surprise
for me!
5. Washington, D.C. is the residence of the government, Congress
and the U.S. President.
6. The U.S. Congress and Senate
meet in the Capitol which is free for
visiting to all tourists.
