1. Hello, I’m Valery T., and I’d
like to tell you about my English
studies.
2. I’ll start with the role of English
as number one language of international communication, then I’ll pass
on to my own experience of learning
it, and I’ll conclude by sharing with
you my idea of how I can use English in my future career.
3. The fact is that English has
become the major language in most
fields of communication all over the
world.
4. There is hardly a sphere of activities where English is not used –
be it computer science, aviation,
banking, business or tourism.
5. Indeed, English is a very important instrument if you want to feel
and be part of the world.
6. The reason for it is perhaps
purely economic, since it is spoken
in the most advanced countries – the
USA, Great Britain, Canada, and
Australia.

7. I started learning English in the
fifth form of a secondary school.
8. We all were very enthusiastic
about making progress in mastering
English.
9. I think we were fortunate to
have a good, dedicated teacher who
really cared for us.
10. Our teacher tried to find various
means to keep us interested in the
subject.
11. It was not easy, since pretty
soon we realized that it’s not only
about games but hard work in the
first place.
12. And yet, we always combined
listening with reading, speaking and
some writing.
13. What I soon found out is that
it’s a matter of practice to become
fluent in each of those activities.
14. Then all the difficulties in the
English spelling and reading rules
seem not so big, even though, as
they joke about them, “you write
Manchester and read Liverpool”.
15. As a matter of fact, we all are
now more exposed to the English
speaking countries and their culture
than our parents were.
16. What I mean is that it’s quite
common now to watch a film in
English or get all kinds of fiction
and text-books printed in the UK or
the USA.

your English, there are lots of opportunities for it.
18. As for me, I got seriously interested in English in the eighth form,
and my parents encouraged and supported me.
19. At present, I have a few good
dictionaries, both bilingual and English–English ones.
20. I also try to listen to audio and
video cassettes as well as use the
Internet to enrich my vocabulary.
21. I think learning English – any
foreign language to be more exact –
is an endless process.
22. I was so happy when I was able
to speak English with people from
Sweden.
23. I realized that native speakers of
English have no privilege in communicating in the English language.
24. Since I’m going to study economics and management, this is
going to be a very important tool for
my future career.
25. I mean I’ll have to use English
for professional reading, during
business talks and business trips.
26. I am sure my interest in English
will do me good, and I hope I’ll be
able to improve it when I become a
university student.

TASK 1
Read the text.
MURDER ON THE ‘CANADIAN’
Catherine Saks has been murdered on board an express train. One of the
passengers, Tom, is trying to identify the murderer. He has been telling Mrs
Ruggles, a nice old lady, what he has discovered so far. Tom thinks Mr Faith
is the murderer.
§ 1. During the story, Mrs Ruggles had listened quietly, nodding her
head, asking questions from time to time. Now she lit another cigarette and
looked carefully at Tom. ‘Very, very clever,’ she said. ‘You really are a detective.’
§ 2. Tom grinned happily, unable to hide his pleasure. ‘Maybe you could
help me!’ he said. ‘We can find Mr Faith, and then you ask him some questions about his suitcase. That way we might nail
him down.’
§ 3. ‘That sounds like fun,’ Mrs Ruggles said. She gave Tom some
sweets, then stood up and walked to the washroom, saying, ‘Excuse me a
minute, I’ll need fresh lipstick if we’re going out in public.’
§ 4. The washroom door clicked closed, and Tom sat back with the
sweets. He had consulted his notebook while talking to Mrs Ruggles, and now
he quickly ran through the pages, checking details. Suddenly he realized he’d
forgotten to make a note on the cigarette end he had found with Catherine’s
dead body. He took the envelope he had put it in from the pocket and copied
out the details.
§ 5. ‘What’s that?’ Mrs Ruggles asked, returning from the washroom.
‘Oh, I thought this was a clue
.’ Tom answered, opening the envelope and
removing the cigarette end.
‘A clue?’
‘Well, the killer might have left it behind by mistake.’ Smiling, Tom
pointed at the red smear
on the cigarette end. ‘However, I don’t think Mr
Faith wears lipstick.’
Mrs Ruggles laughed. ‘I hope not.’

§ 6. ‘Catherine Saks used a cigarette holder, which means her cigarette
never touched her lips. So this lipstick can’t be hers.’
‘That doesn’t make sense, Tom,’ Mrs Ruggles said, sitting down in her
chair and picking up her handbag from the floor.
‘Sure it does!’ Tom said, excited. ‘Some other woman was in her com-
partment that night, smoking.’
§ 7. Mrs Ruggles laughed. ‘Really, Tom, that is far-fetched
. If you want
me to help with your case, you’ll need to have better theories.’
‘You don’t understand,’ Tom said, impatient that the old lady’s mind
worked so slowly. He was trying to think of another way to explain about the
lipstick, when his eye fell on one of her cigarette ends in the ashtray. ‘You’d
better put that out,’ he said.
§ 8. ‘Oh, yes.’
Mrs Ruggles reached for the cigarette end, and ground
it firmly out. As
she did, Tom realized that it had a red lipstick stain. A cold, sick feeling
spread through his body as he lifted his eyes to stare
at Mrs Ruggles.
§ 9. Smiling, the old lady reached one hand to her head and lifted off her
wig – she appeared
to have thick black hair which shone in the light from the
window. At the same moment, she took a small revolver from her handbag
and pointed it at Tom.
‘Congratulations,’ she said. ‘You‘ve just found the killer.’
