1. Hello, I’m Tamara N., and I’m
going to talk about my free time and
hobby.
2. Well, first of all I really wish I
had more free time, but of course I
enjoy weekends and holidays as most
other people do.
3. Unlike week days which are
pretty much the same, every weekend
is special for me.
4. On weekend we have an opportunity to enjoy all kinds of leisure
activities and relax after a busy week.
5. Since I study at the gymnasium
with advanced learning of arts, Saturday is not free for us, so I can speak
about a short weekend – just Sunday
is a day off.
6. It’s nice to stay at home on Sunday, but even this day has to be carefully planned if I really want to fully
enjoy it.
7. I think it was Ivan Pavlov who
said that rest is a change of activities.

8. Having this in mind, I try to
really change my activities on my day
off – attend the rehearsal of the choir
[kwaωə], go to a museum or get together with my friends.
9. Talking of the choir, I must say
that it has become part of my life.
10. I’ve been engaged in this musical
group for several years, and it’s indeed work and pleasure – to practise,
perform and travel.
11. Thanks to this choir I was able to
see several countries of Europe – Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium,
Finland and Sweden.
12. Besides, we usually raise a lot of
funds during the concert tours and
spend them to provide assistance to
sick and needy children of Belarus.
13. Talking of hobbies, I really find
it interesting to read a good book.
14. We’ve got a very rich library at
home, and I’m glad I was able to enrich my mind by reading books of
different genres.
15. Reading is indeed a mindbroadening activity, and it’s also fun.
16. I’ve learnt to compare and analyze facts and events, and this is so
important in life.
17. You know, some people complain of lack of time, and I can understand them.
18. However, in most cases it’s just
an excuse.
19. We always find time to do what
we really want to.

сочетание приятного с полезным –
репетировать, выступать и путешествовать.
11. Благодаря этому хору я смогла
повидать несколько стран Европы –
Польшу, Германию, Голландию,
Бельгию, Финляндию и Швецию.
12. Кроме этого, мы обычно собираем средства для оказания помощи больным и нуждающимся детям Беларуси.
13. Что касается увлечений, мне
действительно интересно почитать
хорошую книгу.
14. У нас дома хорошая библиотека, и я рада, что смогла обогатить
себя чтением книг разных жанров.
15. Читать для меня – это и расширение кругозора, и увлекательное
занятие.
16. Я научилась сравнивать и анализировать факты и события, а это
так важно в жизни.
17. Вы
знаете, некоторые жалуют-
ся на нехватку времени, и я могу
их понять.
18. Однако в большинстве случаев
это лишь отговорка.
19. Мы всегда находим время на
то, что действительно хотим делать.

21. To conclude, I’d like to say that
as far as spending free time, a lot depends on how we see it for ourselves.
22. Some young people living in
Minsk have never been to museums
or theatres, and there are others who
come there from other towns and villages.
23. Again, it’s all about priorities,
and you have to decide it for yourself
what you really enjoy doing in your
free time.
24. How about simply watching people and life passing by?..

Read the text.
MALE NURSE
§ 1. Dave Brook is a nurse at the Royal Free Hospital in London, a job he
thoroughly
enjoys, although he told me it was the last thing he ever expected
to do. ‘I wanted to become a teacher, but I couldn’t afford to stay on at
school, so I ended up leaving home at 16 and getting a job at the local steelworks. I didn’t like it all that much; the main problem was that I hardly ever
had any contact with other people, and I like working with people very
much.’
§ 2. It was Dave’s liking for helping other people that made him join a
nursing course, where there were only six males out of roughly
forty trainees.
I asked Dave if being so outnumbered made college any different for the
boys. ‘Well, we tended to stick together,’ he said, ‘and I think we were expected to prove ourselves because we were different.’
§ 3. After college, Dave worked in a Sheffield hospital, before moving to
London. ‘I prefer working in London because this hospital has more progressive attitudes. In Sheffield, men are only allowed to nurse other men, although
the female nurses can look after both men and women. I believe that mixed
nursing makes for a healthier working environment.’
§ 4. So are there any disadvantages to being a male nurse? ‘Some older
women don’t like it, and you find that many Asian women prefer a female
nurse because of their religion. But on the whole, most women are happy to
see a man’s face once in a while! And some men feel embarrassed
about be-
ing nursed by a woman, so male nurses are useful here, too.’
§ 5. Has Dave’s being a nurse changed people’s attitude towards him?
‘Most people really aren’t that bothered,’ he said. ‘Why should they be?’ After all, it’s just my job. My dad disapproves of it, which is a pity, but most
people think nothing of it. When I talk about work, some people say things
like, ‘Oh, so you a male nurse’. I don’t see why they can’t just say I’m a
nurse. I would hope it’s obvious that I’m male!’
§ 6. ‘Another mistake that people often make is thinking that I’m just
nursing because it’s a stepping stone
to being a doctor. It isn’t! Nursing and

medicine are two totally different professions, which require
different quali-
ties.’
§ 7. On the subject of being a man in a woman’s world, Dave stresses
that the advantages are greater than the disadvantages. ‘The only disadvantage that I can think of,’ he says, ‘is that the older sisters tend to check up on
the men a bit more and often think that we’re not as good as the girls. But
once they get to know you and trust your work, they’re fine, and you can have
a successful working relationship. The main advantage is that there are not
many male nurses yet. It’s a chance to prove yourself in a different environment.’
§ 9. Dave is convinced that male nurses can be just as good as the girls.
As he said to me before he left, ‘I want to stress that nursing is about caring. I
always try to prove to my patients that I care. It’s not true that men are harder –
I know some pretty ruthless
