TASK 1
Read the text.
§ 1. Shirley Jones and her friend Jean Gray run Janimals, the highly successful animal training and handling team that provides ‘all creatures great
and small’ for a vast proportion of popular films, commercials and television
shows. Although the two have joined forces only recently, they are long-time
friends and have years of experience in handling animals for showbiz.
§ 2. Knowing only too well the risks of working with animals unused to
the hustle-bustle
of studio work and boring long hours on location, both Jean
and Shirley have a troupe of highly-trained and dependable pets that will hop,
skip or jump into the film-star role at the drop of a hat. Between them, they
have 14 dogs, five cats, various rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even a few
caged rats.
§ 3. Apart from the regulars, they also have short-term house guests ranging from giant African bull-frogs and boa constrictors to the occasional llama
borrowed from contacts for a particular job. Combining this menagerie
with a
clutch of children (both Jean and Shirley have teenagers), their respective
homes in Twickenham and Maidenhead are not the quietest in their
neighbourhoods.
§ 4. Although clever camera shots, off-scene stunts and editing can create
the impression that animals have come to unbelievable achievements, many
jobs do actually require a high degree of training and ability from both the
‘stars’ and their handlers
.
§ 5. Inca, Jean’s Border collie, has turned in some performances worthy
of a first prize for acting. In an episode of ‘Park Ranger’, the children’s programme, she played the part of a dog with rabies [animal’s madness]. ‘In the
course of the programme, she had to turn from a gentle children’s pet into a
raging, rabid [mad, furious] beast,’ explains Jean.
§ 6. With her appearance helped on by smears of egg white simulating
froth around the mouth, Inca closely followed every signal from her mistress –
and positively chilled

§ 7. Some animals are more easily trained than others, but Jean – who
also works as an instructor in obedience classes for dogs – reckons she can
always teach any old dog new tricks.
§ 8. Too often it’s not dumb animals but daft
humans who endanger the
success of a job. ‘A lot of film crews think you just have to push a button and
the animal will come up with the right response,’ says Shirley. ‘Often our job
means a 4 a.m. start, only to be kept waiting hours in the studio or on location. Alternatively, when, after the thousand and first take the shot isn’t right
and the dog is bored, they ask you why he isn’t performing properly. Sometimes, the main challenge of a job can be getting on good terms with the film
crew!’
