2. The Infinitive as Predicate

  1. In interrogative why – sentences: Why go away? Why not forget?

  2. In exclamatory infinitive sentences expressing the speaker’s rejection of the idea that the person to whom the action of the infinitive is ascribed is likely to perform this action: You to say such a thing! Me – marry him! Never!

3.The Infinitive as Part of the Predicate

The infinitive is used as part of different types of predicates:

3.1 the Simple Verbal Predicate;

3.2 the Compound Nominal Predicate proper;

3.3 the Compound Verbal Modal Predicate;

3.4 the Compound Verbal Phasal Predicate;

3.5 Predicates of Mixed Types.

3.1 The Infinitive as Part of the Simple Verbal Predicate

The infinitive is used to make analytical forms of the verb: AUXILIARY VERBS + the INFINITIVE. In this case the infinitive is used as part of the Simple Verbal Predicate.

The cinema will close in November. The shop did not open last week. Did he go to Africa last year? Does he often play tennis? They don’t speak German.

3.2The Infinitive as Part of the Compound Nominal Predicate proper

A clause is/ was/ will be/ would be to do smth

A noun means/ meant to be done

E.g.: Her ambition is to open her own shop.

All I want is to be left alone.

His greatest wish was to tell her everything.

The problem was which to choose.

NOTE:

Sentences like these can also be constructed with “the introductory it”: It was her ambition to open her own shop. It is your task to get across the river without being seen.

3.3 The Infinitive as Part of the Compound Verbal Modal Predicate

  1. A modal verb + the infinitive: He can’t say a word. You must listen to your teacher. She might have left the car unlocked. You should follow a healthy diet. You needn’t have bought any bread. I’d already bought. Do I have to tidy my room? We were to meet at three. You are to stay here until I return.

  2. Modal expressions (to be able, to be allowed, to be willing, to be capable, to be going) + the infinitive: I wasn’t able to reach him on the phone. All citizens over the age of 18 are allowed to vote. I’m willing to do something. What are you going to do at two?

  3. The expressions: had better (best), had rather, would sooner/rather + the infinitive: I’d rather not say. You had better start at once.
