2.6.The Present Participle as Adverbial Modifier of Comparison

In this function the present participle is used with the conjunctions as if, as though:

He looked at me, as if not recognizing. (He looked at me as if he were not recognizing me.)

John shook his head as though saying, “Don't trust her”.

Exercise 13. Rewrite the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of comparison:

1.Beckworth shook his head as if he said, 'Don't trust her'. 2.All of them stared at him intently, as though they tried to understand something. 3.She looked around as if she hesitated. 4.He rubbed his eyes and yawned as if he had woken up after a long sleep. 5.She spoke as if she suspected me of something wrong.

Exercise 14. Complete the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of comparison:

1.He hugged his granny as if ... 2.He looked round as if .... 3.He raised his head as if .... 4.He looked at her with entreaty as though .... 5.Mother smiled as if …

2.7.The Present Participle as Adverbial Modifier of Concession

In this function the present participle is usually used with the conjunction though:

Though lacking official support, they continue their struggle. (Though they lack official support, they continue their struggle.)

Though being tired, she went to the kitchen to cook dinner.

Exercise 15. Rewrite the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of concession:

1.Though she's almost forty, she still plans to compete. 2.Though she was no more than twenty-two, she was already a highly successful businesswoman. 3.Though Jane was tired, she continued her work. 4.Though she had two children of her own, she wanted to adopt a child. 5.Though he has a weak voice, he is popular with the public.

Exercise 16. Complete the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of concession:

1.Though ..., I could not help smiling. 2.Though ..., we will be there in time. 3.Though ..., she tried to look calm. 4.Though …, the teacher controlled himself.

2.8.The Present Participle as Adverbial Modifier of Condition

The present participle is often used in the function of an adverbial modifier of condition in sentences with the verb-predicate in the Future Indefinite tense form.

Working hard, you’ll soon catch up with the group. (If you work hard, you’ll soon catch up with the group.)

Driving at this speed, we’ll be home about six. (If we drive at this speed, we’ll be home about six.)

Exercise 17. Rewrite the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of condition:

1.If you work hard, you will pass your exams. 2.If you read English books in the original, you’ll enlarge your vocabulary. 3.If I drink too much coffee, I’ll have to run to the bathroom all day long. 4.If you are persistent, you’ll find out the truth. 5.If you behave properly, you’ll be forgiven.

Exercise 18. Complete the sentences using participles as adverbial modifiers of condition:

1…., you’ll make good progress. 2…., he’ll be at the top of his class. 3…., she’ll achieve her aim. 4…., she will react differently. 5…., we’ll come to the concert in time.
