Text

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

The most famous Federal Government Agency in the US is the Federal Bureau of Investigation (the FBI).

In 1908 when the FBI was created it was a small group of special investigators.

As the organisation grew, its records and files expanded and criminal records and fingerprint collections were transferred from other authorities with the approval of Congress.

The fingerprint collection of the FBI is now the largest in the world. A crime laboratory was established to make examinations for the FBI and to serve as a scientific clearinghouse for evidence and crime problems which were submitted by police forces throughout the country. The laboratory is the largest and best equipped in the would.

Training School for Special Agents were set up in Washington. It instructs agents in modern crime detection methods. Courses include Federal law, accounting, the science of fingerprinting, crime scene searches, interviews, photography, firearms and self-defence.

The Bureau has always received co-operation from forces throughout the country. Without this co-operation the work of the FBI will be difficult. The authorities of the Bureau have always believed that effective law enforcement is possible only if scientific training, careful selection of personnel and co-operation between police agencies are established.
