The Police of England and Wales

The police system must be very efficient. There are approximately 110 000 police personnel in 43 semiautonomous police forces in England and Wales that share responsibilities with the central government.

Primary police functions include patrol, traffic enforcement and criminal investigation. Various transportations are available. There are helicopters and boats in some police forces. The police have no arms but can obtain weapons if necessary. Many of the police forces prosecute their own cases in the lower magistrates; court. The police initiate and conduct most prosecutions in England and Wales. Each town has a magistrates' court commonly known as a Police Court which hears the less serious cases. Such courts consist of from two to seven magistrates.

If a person breaks the law he must be brought first before a magistrates' court which has the power to impose fines up to 100 pounds and to send people to prison, for up to six months. If a case is more serious they hear the materials of the case and then send the case to a higher court called Crown Court where is a jury.

The police are responsible to their regional level of government and also to the national government. The greatest attention is paid to the character of any candidate before he is appointed to the British Police Force. Only one of every thirty men who apply for work in the police is selected.
