Departments of Defectology

Departments of Defectology are part of the Academy of Pedagog­ical 1) Sci__nces and established to train teachers and conduct 2) rese__rch on various problems concerned with the education of the 3) bl__nd, the mentally 4) ret__rded, the deaf and the 5) spe__ch defective, as well as on various features of 6) p_ysical characteristics of normal children. There are doctors, physiologists, educators and 7) met_odologists attached to the department.

Departments of Defectology have the 1) ________of establish­ing special schools for the Ministry of 2) _______ and for planning their curricula. Preparation and Supply of Defectologists

In our country the dominant professional personnel in 1) ment_l re­tardation are defectologists, a general term including all educators of 2) handi__apped children. Defectologists (or special educators) are 3) tra_ned in departments of defectology at pedagogical universities. They 4) compl_te a five-year undergraduate training program specializ­ing in teaching the 5) reta_ded. The Institutes of Defectology cooperate with 6) lo_al school system and work closely with a few specifically 7) desi_nated internats.

In the 1) _______ year of training at the pedagogical university, the students take a heavy load in human 2) ________ and physiology, including special emphasis on the 3) _______ nervous system. In the second year they take introductory courses in 4) _______education and continue their general education. 5) _______the third year they begin their specialized course work for teaching the mentally 6) _______ and start to participate in student teaching.
