Why Artists Paint

There are probably as many 1) rea__ons why artists paint as there are artists painting. Here is another "Top Ten" 2) l__st. This one is not written with 3) ton__ue in cheek. The subject is too important to be taken so 4) li__htly, because it gets down into what we are as artists. We may not all agree as to the exact 5) ran__ings, and there may be some I've not 6) exper__enced myself, but for the most part, I think the list comes 7) prеt__y close.

A. To Learn. It's not the only way we learn, but it's the best way. And those of us who don’t 1) __________ for this reason risk stagnation.

B. As 2) ________. This is the most personal and selfish reason we paint.

C. For self-expression. Artists are quite 3) _________. The picture may be worth a thousand words but a thousand 4) ______or so never hurt. Often both are necessary to say what the artist has on his or her 5) _______.

D. For the money. It is a very important 6) ________ for us as artists. Whether we want it or not, it is a source of 7) _____________ for a great number of artists.

Painting as a Spiritual Expression

Is a painting no more than a 1) p__ece of paper with lines and color or is it more than that? In the hands of the 2) m__ster painter, who is painting in the spirit; the lifeless sheet of 3) p__per with its lines and colors, is 4) transfo__med into a 5) crea__ion that has life, just as the creator gave life to his 6) maste__piece. The painter transmits the 7) essen__e of his spirit to his creation, the “painting.”

An artist not only 1) _______ the forms of nature, the artist’s spirit interacts with the 2) ________ of the animals or men he is painting. His painting captures both the spirit and the 3) ________ of its subject. One can see it in the expression, the eyes, and the 4) _______ of the painting. All good paintings 5) ________ an emotion or message to the observer. It might be a message of love, harmony or 6) ________; or it might be a message of danger, fury, or sadness. It could be a lesson, or something that all of us as humans can 7) _____ with, such as a desire to be loved.
