Viräò viñëuù devatä

upaviçad arhaëéya jape viniyogaù

oà idam-aham-imäà pädyäà viräjam annädyäyädhi tiñöhämi

I preside over this far reaching step for sustenance.”

The father should take twenty five leaves of kuça wound two and a half times in counter clockwise direction in the palms of this hands with tips pointing North and say:

oà viñöaro viñöaro viñöaraù prati gåhyatäm

Please receive this kuça grass.”

The groom should reply:

oà viñöaraà pratigåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

anuñöup chandaù

auñadhyo viñëuù devatä

Viñöarasya äsanadäne viniyogaù

oà yä oñadhiù soma räjïéù vahvé çata-vicakñaëäù

tä mahyam-asmin äsane acchidräù çarma yacchata

I receive it. The great herb, the queen of Soma, being plentiful, faultless, and a hundred times wise, bestow blessings on me as I sit upon you for an äsana.”

He should place the tips pointing North and sit on it.

The father should offer kuça again:

viñöaro viñöaro viñöaraù pratighåyatäm

The groom says:

oà viñöaraà prati gåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

anuñöup chandaù

auñadhyo viñëuù devatä

viñöarasya pädayoradhastä däne viniyogaù

oà yä oñadéù soma räjïéh viñöhitäù påthivém anu

tä mahyam-asmin pädayoù acchidräù çarma yacchata

Great herb, queen of Soma, growing wherever there is earth, faultless, please bestow blessings on me at my two feet.”

He should place the kuça beneath his feet with tips facing North.

The father should offer water for his feet:

oà pädyäù pädyäù pädyäù pratigåhyantäm

The groom should reply:

oà pädyäù pratigåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

viräò gäyatré chandaù

äpo viñëuù devatä

päda prakñälanärthodakavékñaëe viniyogaù

oà yato devéù pratipaçyämy- äpas tato mä åddhir ägacchatu

May prosperity come to me, oh water, from looking at you.”

The groom should receive the water from the father, place it on the earth, gaze at it, then pour water on the left foot, then right foot, then both feet with the following mantras:

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

viräò gäyatré chandaù

äpo viñëuù devatä

savya-päda prakñane viniyogaù

oà savyaà pädam avanenije asmin räñöre çréyaà dadhe

I wash the left foot and bestow wealth in this domain.”

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

viräò gäyatré chandaù

äpo viñëuù devatä

dakñiëa-päda prakñane viniyogaù

oà dakñiëaà pädam avanenije asmin räñöre çréyamäveçayämi

I wash the right foot and take possession of wealth in this domain.”

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

viräò gäyatré chandaù

äpo viñëuù devatä

ubhaya-päda prakñane viniyogaù

oà pürvam anyaà param anyaà

ubhaya pädau avanenije

räñörasardhyä abhayasyävaruddhyai

I wash one foot then the other. By prosperity of this domain may I attain fearlessness.”

The father should take dürva, white rice, etc in a conch and offer ärghya, saying:

oà ärghyaà ärghyaà ärghyaà pratigåhyatäm

The groom should say:

oà ärghya pratigåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

arghya-rüpo viñëuù devatä

arghya-pratigrahëe viniyogaù

oà annasya räñörir-asi

räñöris-te bhüyäsaà

You are the ruler of food. May I become your master.”

The father should offer äcamanéyaà:

oà äcamanéyaà äcamanéyaà äcamanéyaà pratigåhyatäm

The groom should reply:

oà äcamanéyaà pratigåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

äcamanéyam viñëuù devatä

äcamanéyäcamane viniyogaù

oà yaço ‘si yaço mayi dhehi

You are fame. Give fame to me.”

He should sip the water facing North.

The father should take a pot of madhuparka and offer:

oà madhuparko madhuparko madhuparkaù pratigåhyatäm

The groom should take the madhuparka, and place the container on the earth saying:

oà madhuparkaà pratigåhnämi

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

madhuparko viñëuù devatä

aharëéya madhhuparkaà grahaëe viniyogaù

oà yaçaso yaço ‘si

You are fame incarnate.”

He should drink three times saying:

oà prajäpatiù viñëu åñiù

madhuparko viñëuù devatä

aharëéya madhuparka präçane viniyogaù

oà yaçaso bhakño ‘si

mahaso bhakño ‘si

çrér bhakño ‘si

çréyaà mayi dhehi

You are the food of fame, the food of greatness. You are the food of virtues. Give me all virtues.”

He should drink once silently.

The groom should now face East; the father of the bride should face North or West.

The groom and bride should perform äcamana and then smear kum-kum, gorocana and candana on their right hands.

The groom should take the bride’s right hand and place it on top of his right hand, and a married woman with a son should bind the two hands with kuça and garlands, while auspicious sounds are made by the women.

The father of the bride should take a pot of water mixed with gandha, flowers, tulasé and fruit @and recite viñëu smaraëam (see Appendix ???????????).

The father should give the bride, saying:

oà viñëu

oà tat sat

adya brahmaëo dvitéya-parärdhe,

sveta varäha kalpe, vaivasvatäkhya manvantare,

añöäviàçati kali-yugasya prathama sandhyayäà

brahma viàçatau vartämanäyäà

.....räçi sthite bhäskare (sun sign)

medhébhütasya sumeroù dakñine

lavanärnavasyottare kone

gaìgäyäù paçcime bhäge

çré çälagräma çélä go brähmaëa vaiñëava vähni sannidhau

.....çarmaëaù prapauträya (to the great grandson of....)

.....çarmaëaù pauträya (to the grandson of....)

.....çarmaëaù puträya (to the son of....)

çré .....çarmaëe visiñöa varäya (to the groom named...)

.....çarmaëaù prapautrim (the great grand daughter of ....)

.....çarmaëaù pautrim (the great granddaughter of....)

.... çarmaëaù putrim (the daughter of......)

çrématém....abhidhanäà etäà kanyäà (the bride named....)

sa vasträà yathä çakty-alaìkåtäà

aroginéà apraväsinéà yathä kälopasthäpinéà

oà prajäpati viñëu devatäkäà

çré çré rädhä-kåñëa smaraëa pürvakaà

.....çarma dvärä [through the agency of .......(father)]

svayaà çré çré rädhä-kåñëau dattäm

May Rädhä and Kåñëa personally give this bride named....(identified by father’s ancestors), equipped with cloth and ornaments, healthy, of age and fixed residence, to the groom named......(identified by his father’s ancestors) at the time........, at the place......with çälagräma, the cow, the brähmaëa, vaiñëava and fire as witness.”

The father should pour the water over their bound hands.

The groom should say:

oà svasti

oà näräyaëäya vidmahe
