23. Past Simple vs Past Continuous.

    1. Past Simple

Regular VERB +ED or irregular VERB II

The Past Simple is usually formed by adding -ED to the verb if the verb is regular or we use the second form of irregular verb.

Affirmative form I you                 WORKED we

they MADE he/she/it

Negative form I you      DID NOT /didn't/ we            WORK

they

he/she/it  DID NOT /didn't/    MAKE

 Interrogative form                I

       you

DID      we WORK?               they MAKE? he/she/it

Exceptions when adding 'ed' :

  • when the final letter is e, only add d.

Example: love - loved

  • after a short, stressed vowel, the final consonant is doubled

Example: admit - admitted

  • final l is always doubled in British English (not in American English)

Example: travel - travelled

  • after a consonant, final y becomes i. (but: not after a vowel)

Example: worry - he worried but: play - he played

The Simple Past tense is used :

to talk about an action or a situation - an event - in the past when the event is completely finished. The event can be short or long.

Here are some short events with the past simple tense:

e.g. The car exploded at 9.30am yesterday. She went to the door. We did not hear the telephone. Did you see that car?

Long events with the past simple tense:

e.g. I lived in Bangkok for 10 years. The Jurassic period lasted about 62 million years.
