17. Role Play “What would you take to sea”.

You are about to undertake a long voyage.

  1. Choose among the four or five of you what duties you will have on the ship. What role will you play?

  2. What type of ship will you chose for your journey?

  3. Take a look at the world map or globe in your classroom. Where are you sailing from? What is your destination?

  4. What personal supplies will you need to survive this trip?

  5. What kind of knowledge do you need to steer the ship in the right direction?

  6. What supplies will you need to keep the ship sailing?

  7. Will the sailors and the ship survive the journey?

Some hints:

  1. A. Choose the most important people needed to run a ship (would you want a captain? a cook? a doctor? a navigator? a crewman? all of these people?)

B. Choose what type of ship you will take your journey in.

C. Where are you sailing from and where do you expect to go?

D. What food and drink will you take to last journey?

E. If you must stop along the way to resupply, where do you plan to get your supplies?

F. Will you take extra clothing or bedding?

G. How will you maintain hygiene?

H. Do you want to include medical supplies? What kind of medical supplies do you think you will need?

  1. What scientific/math knowledge would you need to steer the ship?

    1. Knowledge of navigational instruments and how they are used.

    2. Knowledge of the position of the sun, moon, and stars.

  2. What supplies will be needed to keep the ship sailing?

    1. Rope.

    2. Nails.

    3. Kits to repair sails

    4. Extra wood to make repairs

Then the Captain from each group will report their results. Have a class discussion on which groups would survive or not survive and why.

Answers to Test (Ex. 8, Un.8):

  1. Everyday 17,000 tons of garbage is being dumped into the seas.

  2. The Mediterranean is a 'closed' sea. The waters are renewed through the Atlantic Ocean every 80 years.

  3. False! Garbage does not 'disappear'. The piles of garbage which appear on our beaches is the sad proof.

  4. Unfortunately the list is endless.

  5. False. Not only does garbage not dissolve, but it brings death to the sea bottom.

  6. False. Floating garbage (like plastic bags and bottles) is often mistaken by seabirds, fish, seals, and sea turtles, which try to swallow the floating debris. This causes injury, drowning, and usually a slow and painful death.

7. Bus ticket: 2 - 4 weeks

  1. Cotton cloth: 1 - 5 months

  2. Rope: 3 - 14 months

  3. Woollen cloth: 1 year

  4. Painted wood: 13 years

  5. Tin can: 100 years

  6. Aluminium can: 200 - 500 years

  7. Plastic bottle: 450 years

  8. Glass bottle: unknown.

  1. The total length of the coastline of Greece, together with the 3,000 small and large islands, is 16,000 km / 9,942 Statute Miles.

  2. All of us who live on this planet. The Governments enact laws and regulations, the implementation and compliance to which is our business. We must show to the next generation, by our example, the need for protecting our seas and beaches from pollution. Nobody wants to live in a degraded environment, in particular when this environment is our heritage.

For this reason:

  1. We should not leave our garbage on the beaches we visit.

  2. We should demand garbage containers to be placed on the beaches and use them.

  3. We should not throw our garbage into the sea when travelling.

  4. We should always give the example to those around us and demand their respect for the sea.

  5. We must all understand that the sea is a source of life for us, our children, our planet.

We must remember that protection of our seas and shores today is our own responsibility, to ensure a better life for our children tomorrow.
