Choose one of the words below and explain which one you are thinking of (without saying its name or any part of its name) until your partner guesses which one you are talking about, starting your sentences with:

“It’s a person who/ whose…”

“It’s a thing/ machine/ gadget that/ which + verb

“It’s a thing/ machine/ gadget that/ which/ + subject + verb”

“It’s a place where…”

Mechanic, cargo ship, muster station, light house, sailor, Chief Officer, anchor, liferaft.

Ask the other students e.g. What do we call a person who is designated to watch for other vessels and hazards? (Lookout) What do we call a person who helps with the work on a boat? (hand). How do we call an annually published book that contains information about the position of the sun, moon, planets, and stars? (Nautical Almanac)

They have to find the answers.

21. Complete the conversation. Put in the relative clauses using the information in brackets. (Sometimes there is more than one correct answer).
