- John, why were you so late to work today?

- I’m sorry, but there was a car accident in the city center, which resulted in a horrible traffic jam. I was stuck in traffic without moving for over an hour!

- I see. If I were you, I would have called the office to let us know that you’d be late. Since we’ve gotten a late start, we are going to be so behind all day.

- I know, really. But I couldn’t help it. If I had thought that there would be a problem, I would have brought my cell phone with me to work. But I never have any trouble getting to work on time, so I just didn’t think about it.

- Alright. We’ll have to forget about it now. But please, if you think you’ll be late in the future, please call and let us know. And don’t forget to keep your cell phone with you!

As Dave drove into the center of the city, he really wished that he had managed to get up earlier that morning. He found himself in a horrible traffic jam, and if he didn’t get through it in ten minutes, he would definitely be late for work. His boss was anything but lax, and if he got to work late he was sure to be reprimanded. He had already been late for work ten times during the past month. As he sat in the traffic jam grumpy drivers honked their horns at each other and yelled out their windows. He wondered if these drivers really thought that yelling and honking would accomplish anything. Instead, Dave sat silently and waited. Finally the traffic eased up and his car was able to move. “Ok,” he thought to himself. “If I can get to work without hitting another red light, I will be on time.” As it turned out, luck was on his side and he got to work on time. But when he walked into his office, he realized that his boss, Rob, hadn’t yet arrived. “Where’s Rob,” Dave asked coworker. “Oh,” the coworker answered. “Rob just called. He won’t get in for another few hours. He had a head-on collision today, in his brand-new car! He wasn’t injured, but he has to sort out all of the insurance information.” “Shoot!” Dave exclaimed to himself. If he had known that Rob would also be late, he would have stopped at Starbucks to get a coffee before work. Well, he was just happy to get through this day without being yelled at by his cantankerous employer.
