Letter No. 9. Short - delivery of the goods

Dear Sirs

In confirmation of our telephone conversation with your Mr. Ivanov which took place on June 1Г, we wish to inform you that the first consignment of Caviar¹ under contract No. 1518/23 has duly arrived.

However after unpacking the cases we discovered that 20 tins² of Caviar were missing³.

Moreover we were sorry to find that there was another grade⁴ of Caviar in one hundred tins, three tins being badly damaged. We have to state that the above has caused us a lot of trouble. In the circumstances we have to refer to the fact⁵ that when drawing up and signing the contract we especially pointed out, that the assortment of the goods ordered by us should be in strict conformity with the specifications attached to the order.

We request you to make every effort⁶ that 100 tins should arrive by the 10^th next month at the latest.

Should you fail for any reason, to deliver the goods by the appointed date, please let us know immediately.

Letter No. 10. Claim in connection with short-delivery of the goods

20^th January, 19..

Dear Sirs

We have received two shipments from John Brown Engineering on the s.s. Thomas Jefferson when it discharged in St. Petersburg in September. On unpacking the crates¹ our clients discovered a few shortages in four crates. With this letter we enclose Experts Examination Acts² Nos. 15912, 21313, 212314 and 107630 and a list detailing the missing components.

These shortages are causes of great inconvenience to us necessitating³ the

making of constant excuses⁴ to our customers.

It is essential that we deliver part of the consignment to our Finnish customers on time, as this was a trial order⁵ from them and it would give us an opening in the Scandinavian market.

Unless we receive the missing components within the next week we will take legal action⁶.

Letter No. 11. A complaint that not enough goods were despatched

Dear Sirs

We refer to our order (No.l69/SPL) for stainless steel lightweight cutlery¹. Our agent took delivery of the consignment in accordance with the instructions contained in your advice of despatch.

Unfortunately, only 1,873 forks were despatched. The 2,000 knives, packed separately according to our instructions, arrived in good order and condition. However, they are not much use to us without the missing 127 forks. There is a clear discrepancy² between the packing lists which arrived and your invoice. Whether there has been pilferage³ or not is a matter for the Lloyd's agent, who is investigating the matter⁴ at the moment.

We must ask you to arrange for the despatch of replacements for the missing . forks at once, as we must meet a delivery date to our own customers.
