"This is an outrage there's a needle in this soup1" - cried one of his customers.
"Merely a typographical error, sir", said the former printer.
"Should have been noodle".
Writing Ex. 10 Read the thank-you letter
Dear Sarah, 6 August 1955
Just a note to say thank you for the lovely day yesterday. It was really hard to get back to work today after such a relaxing time. Delicious food, good company, a beautiful garden — it really felt like a mini-holiday. The kids had a great time too, and are still talking about the dog and the pool. It was especially nice to meet your parents after hearing about them for so long; they really are just as I imagined them.
Would you like to come to us next weekend? You could come for lunch on Saturday, and we could go for a walk in the hills afterwards if the weather is good. Please bring your parents if they are still staying with you. It would be lovely to see them again.
Hoping to see you next weekend, and with thanks again for yesterday.
Love, Kate
Now choose one of these situations and write a thank-you letter.
1. You (and your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/family) have been to Sunday lunch at your best friend's home and have met his/her fiance(e) for the first time. Write a thank-you letter and invite them back for a meal.
2. You have been taken to lunch by an old friend of your father's/mother's who was in your town for the day. Write, thanking him/her for the meal.
Role-play
Task 1. You want to arrange a business lunch for yourself and representatives of another company. Call the restaurant to reserve a table for the number of people and time you want. Ask what they have on their menu.
Task 2. Your friend and you are having lunch in a restaurant in London. Before paying the bill you decide on how much to tip the waiter. (The meat was overdone, the service was slow, some items on the table were missing).
