Starting university is a rather tricky time, both for the students who
leave home to go to university and their parents who stay behind. Read the advice on how to cope from a first-year student daughter and her dad.
Annie Duffy’s advice to parents
§1. My parents drove me to uni at the end of August. That was great,
but then they hung around, so it was hard to chat to the people in the rooms near mine. It’s best if you leave us to unpack ourselves. Please don’t check up on us or our friends on Facebook. I know it’s a public site, but we have the right to some privacy.
§2. Don’t ask us to come home during the semester. There’s a lot
going on at weekends, there just isn’t time. Get another interest or a pet if you feel lonely without us. Don’t make us feel guilty about leaving home! We’d still like to come on family holidays with you. Don’t forget to include us just because we’re not there all the time.
§3. It is quite interesting to hear about your experiences at uni, but
remember that it was a long time ago so don’t go on about it so much. Things have changed a lot. Now we have a lot more debt and it’ll be
296
harder to find a job in the future. And don’t change anything in our bedrooms. We have only half left home – we’ll be back in the holidays, so please don’t touch anything.
Kevin Duffy’s advice to students
§4. Don’t complain so much about how much work you have to
do. We work a lot too. You’re an adult now, get used to it. Don’t waste so much time on Facebook. You need time for all that work you have to do, remember? Just because you’re at university studying some complex subjects, it doesn’t mean that you’re more intelligent than everybody else. Don’t treat your family as if they were stupid; we’re really not.
§5. Let us come and visit you now and again. We promise to try not
to embarrass you in front of your friends. We just want to see you for a short time and take you out for a meal. Don’t forget to call home from time to time and don’t get annoyed if we phone you. It’s not pestering. If we didn’t call, you wouldn’t know that we care.
§6. We might make a few changes to your room, so deal with it.
It’s great to have a guest room at last, but we won’t change things too much, promise. Put up with the fact that we refused to get a dog while you were at home, then suddenly bought one as soon as you moved out. We miss you!

§1. Since the 2014 Oscars ceremony selfie showing the likes of Brad-
ley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence took the internet by storm, it seems people can’t get enough of the arm-stretching self-portrait. It’s been shared more than 3 million times on social media. And now it seems impossible to stop people sharing even their most intimate moments. The reality TV star Kim Kardashian could be called ‘the queen of the selfie’. She’s turned hundreds of them into a book in which you can see her – among other things – in her undies, pregnant, not pregnant and sticking her tongue out.
§2. If Kim Kardashian is the queen of the selfie, then you could say
Barack Obama is the king. But though Kardashian has nothing to lose by sharing too much, the same can’t be said of the former US president. Politicians have to be careful with selfies. The photo he took at the funeral of South African leader Nelson Mandela divided public opinion. Some felt it made him look like one of us – glad to record a moment with his ‘mates’ British Prime Minister David Cameron and Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning Schmidt. Others felt the head of state behaved like a teenager at a pop concert. And his wife, Michelle, was not amused.
§3. Why do we take so many selfies? Dr Terri Apter, a psychology
lecturer at Cambridge University, told the British newspaper the Daily Telegraph, “It’s a kind of self-definition. We all like the idea of being sort of in control of our image and getting attention, being noticed, being part of the culture. There’s a sense that if we’re not seen, then we’re invisible. You can get so exacerbated by celebrity culture that says unless you’re being noticed, you’re no one. You have to show your life is amazing, even if it isn’t.”
§4. The word ‘selfie’ was Oxford Dictionaries’ ‘word of the year’
in 2013. But many believe the photographic self-portrait started much earlier. The first one was taken in 1839 by Robert Cornelius, an amateur chemist from Philadelphia. Cameras were basic and he had to uncover the lens, run into the shot for a minute before running back to cover the lens again. These days, you don’t need to run for a photo anymore and soon, you won’t even have to stretch your arms. In the near future you
298
might be able to take a selfie by drone! Attach your camera to it, and it will follow your every move. Does it sound exciting to you? Are you ready for your closeup? Smile!

III.
§1. I like to think that I’m bringing my kids up to care about the world
around them. They know that resources are scarce: that they shouldn’t waste water and that they should turn lights off to save electricity when they’re not in a room. I thought my family was environmentally friendly, so I invited Tom Harper from Pollution Prevention Ltd to come and see if I was doing everything right.
§2. The first thing Tom asked when he came into the kitchen was
“How old’s your fridge?” I told him it was about fifteen years old. “Well, by the look of it, you should think about getting a new one.”
“I thought we were supposed to use products for as long as possible
before buying new ones. It still works quite well,” I said.
299
“Well,” said Tom, “it may still keep your food cold, but look at
those door seals. They’re old, so they’re leaking cold air. That means your fridge has to work harder to stay cold, so that uses more electricity. A new one would be much more efficient and cost-effective.”
§3. We moved to the living room. It was November, so the heating
was on. “It’s nice and warm in here,” said Tom, “but there’s a problem with your windows. Those aluminium window frames let a lot more hot air out of the house than wooden or plastic frames do. And you don’t have double-glazed windows that keep in almost twice as much heat as single pane windows. Once again, you’re using far more electricity than you need to.”
§4. “Let’s have a look at your bathroom,” said Tom and we all went
up. “You see that showerhead? It’s got lots of big holes. That’s going to let through about twenty litres of water per minute. A new water-saving showerhead lets through a lot less water, and you still get a good shower. So, if you fit one of those, you’ll not only save water, you’ll also save hot water, so you’ll lower your energy and heating costs.”
This was more like what I wanted to hear. A new fridge and double-
glazing were expensive. A new shower? I could afford that.
§5. Then we went to look at the car. Now I know cars are bad for the
environment, but when you’ve got two children wanting to go to parties and to the sports centre, what other option is there? The nearest bus stop is too far away. Tom was sympathetic, “If you have to have a car, you have to have a car,” he said. “There’s no such thing as an environmentally friendly car, but there are things you can do to reduce the negative impact cars have on the environment. First, you should make sure the engine is kept properly tuned. This can increase fuel efficiency by as much as 8%. Also, regularly check that your air filters are clean. If they’re dirty, that will increase your fuel consumption.”
§6. “There are some things you can do,” said Tom, “they’ll help a
little to protect the environment. A new fridge does cost quite a lot. But you have to be aware that your windows and your fridge at the moment are costing you more than they should in terms of heating bills and electricity use. Nobody benefits from that.”
