stations, when system hydraulic studies have indicated that external assistance may be required in maintaining top condenser tubes full of water. Large air extraction pumps are normally provided for a system priming function, but because of their generally infrequent usage, are often provided on a station basis with individual turbine condensers connected by a busmain. Smaller capacity service pumps are usually installed on

a unit basis to provide continuous air extraction during unit operation. The service pumps should be located adjacent to the individual unit condenser outlet water boxes, but the main priming air pumps can be con­ veniently located to suit pipework and electrical connections.

7.3 Erection and maintenance

The relationship between the boiler and turbine is of basic importance in establishing the overall station layout including the spacing of the individual units, but
