9. Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs

  1. Open the brackets using the proper form of the adjectives:

Mercury is the (small) planet in our solar system, it is the (close) one to the Sun. Apart from the Sun itself the sunny side of Mercury is the (hot) place in the solar system. But the dark side of Mercury is probably even (cold) than the (far) planet Pluto. It is strange to find the (hot) and the (cold) parts of the solar system on the same planet. The (good) time to see Mercury is spring.

  1. Translate the sentences paying attention to the meaning of as…as:

  1. 1. Venus is nearly as big as the Earth. 2. No planet is as hot as the Sun. 3. The speed at which the Earth revolves round the Sun is nearly as high as that of Venus. 4. When Mars is at its greatest distance from the Earth it is nearly as bright as the Polar Star.

  2. 1. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is as great as 150 million kilometers. 2. The temperature at the Sun’s center is as high as 20 million degrees Centigrade. 3. The Moon is as far as 384 thousand kilometers from the Earth.

  3. 1. The mass of the Sun is 11 times as dense as lead. 2. Every square mile on the sunny side of Mercury receives seven times as much heat as a square mile on the Earth. 3. The year on Mars is twice as long as that on the Earth. 4. Mars is 150 times as far from us as the Moon.

  4. 1. Mars as well as Venus is a planet where no life exists. 2. A solid has length as well as width. It has thickness as well. 3. Metals as well as minerals are of great importance in industry. 4. The English system of weights was used in England as well as in a number of other countries.

  1. Translate the following sentences with unequal comparisons:

1. Scientists today know much more about the properties of solids than they did 40 years ago. 2. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is much longer than that from the Moon. 3. The number of discoveries in this century will be much bigger than in the previous one. 4. The new method of converting mechanical energy into electrical one is much more efficient. 5. Due to low accuracy of this instrument it is much worse to make measurements with it. 6. The lowest temperature on the Earth is –80°C. There are far lower temperatures on other planets.

IV.Translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the degrees of comparison of adjectives.

'A. l. This classroom is larger and lighter than other classrooms. It is the largest and the lightest room here. 2. Mathematics is more important for technical students than many other subjects. 3. Lesson 3 is much easier than lesson 4. 4. This article is much more interesting than that one. 5. Exercise 10 is the most difficult one. 6. This instrument is more efficient than the other one. 7. This town is as large as that one. 8. These engines are not so powerful as those motors. 9. The speed of the first sputniks was as big as 11 kilometers per second.

B. 1. The nearer the earth, the denser the atmosphere. 2. The higher the voltage, the higher is the electron velocity. 3. The bigger the mass, the bigger the weight of the body. 4. The higher the temperature, the more rapid is the motion of the molecules. 5. The greater the number of free electrons in a substance, the better this substance conducts electricity.
