4. Salutations.
Dear Sir opens a letter to a man whose name you do not know.
Dear Sirs / Gentlemen (US) are used to address a company,
Dear Sir or Madam is used to address a person of whom you know neither the name nor the sex.
When you know the name of the person you are writing to, the salutation takes the form of Dear followed by a courtesy title and the person’s surname. Initials or first names are not generally used in salutations.
5. The body of the letter.
Divide your letter into paragraphs.
Live a line space between paragraphs.
6. Complimentary closes.
If the letter begins Dear Sir, Dear Sirs, etc., it will close with Yours faithfully.
If the letter begins with a personal name ― Dear Mr Smith ― it will close with Yours sincerely.
Americans tend to close formal letters with Yours truly or Truly yours.
7. Signatures. (Signature block)
Always type your name after your handwritten signature and your position in the firm after your typed signature. You can also include your title in signature. Eg. Yours sincerely,
Smith
J. Smith (Mr)
Assignment 2. The Renault car company is advertising for graduates to join its management programme. Read the advertisement carefully, then prepare the CV and letter of application that you would send to Sian Vernon. You may invent as many details as you wish, but note that the person who you present in your CV will not graduate until the end of this year.
