1 Comparative and superlative: adjectives

*add -er/-est to most one-syllable adjectives

Your flat is larger/bigger than mine.

Elvis was the greatest!

Anna's the laziest girl in the class.

*add more and the most to adjectives of two or more

syllables

A computer is more expensive than a video.

London is the most exciting city I've ever been to.

! Some two syllable adjectives, such as clever, narrow,

gentle, tired, pleasant can form the comparative and

superlative in both ways:

gentle-gentler-the gentlest

or gentle-more gentle-the most gentle

uuuuuul Irregular adjectives

good better than the best

bad worse than the worst

far farther/further the farthest/

furthest

Irregular quantifiers

little less least

much/many more most

few fewer/less fewest/least

2 Comparative and superlative: adverbs

*with regular adverbs, use more and the most

quickly-more quickly-the most quickly

slowly-more slowly-the most slowly

You'll get to the USA more quickly if you fly.

*add -er/-est to most one-syllable adverbs that

have the same form as adjectives

hard - harder - the hardest

fast - faster - the fastest

loud - louder - the loudest

late - later - the latest

Irregular adverbs

well better (the) best

badly worse (the) worst

little less (the) least

much more (the) most

3 (not) as...as

*to compare similar things

I am/am not as tall as my brother.

4 less and the least

*to make negative comparisons My bike cost less than my friend's. Sue's bike cost the least.

5 the + comparative.. .the + comparative

*f or liking two actions

The sooner we go, the better.

The harder you work, the more you will earn.

6 Position of adverbs Adverbs of frequency

Adverbs of manner, adverbs/adverbial phrases of time

*at the end of a sentence

He sings very well.

We arrived late yesterday.

I play tennis once a week, on Saturday mornings.

7 Intensifiers

*to qualify comparatives

My sisters is a bit/a lot older than me.

A computer is far/a great deal more expensive than a video.

8 Gradable/ungradable adjectives and adverbs

*with gradable adjectives such as good, bad, short,

funny, sorry:

rather, quite, fairly, very, extremely, really, terribly

The film was extremely good.

*with ungradable adjectives such as fabulous, wonderful,

incredible, stunning:

quite, absolutely, totally

The holiday was absolutely (NOT extremely) fabulous.
