Exercise 11. Paraphrase the sentences using adverbial clauses of comparison.

Model: She is not a loser. Don’t treat her as a loser. = > Don’t treat her as if she was/were a loser.

Everything was in its place, but still someone had been in the room. It seemed so. It seemed as though someone had been in the room.

1.Dan looks so tired that one might think that he hasn’t had a holiday for two years. 2. Roger has never been to Denmark but he speaks fluent Danish. 3. She covered her eyes with her hands. It seemed that the light was too bright for her. 4. Mr. Simon behaved in such a way that one could think he was the boss there. 5. Hearing her talk you might decide that she’s been to every country in the world. 6. The ground is so dry and cracked. It seems that it hasn’t been raining for ages. 7. From the way you’re speaking to me I might think you’re trying to make a fool of me. 8. Jaime knew the area very well. You could imagine that he had lived there all his life. 9. 2.2.We can express wishes about the past, the present and the future with the help of the verb wish and the phrase if only. If only emphasizes the fact that the situation we wish for is impossible or highly improbable, though these means to speak about our wishes are often interchangeable.

If you wish the situation to be different in the present or future but there is little chance of changing it, use the following pattern with Subjunctive II in the subordinate clause:

Note that the form of Subjunctive II in this pattern coincides with the Past Simple or Continuous. It indicates that the situation wished is simultaneous with or follows the time of making a wish.

If you want to express regret about the situation in the past, use the following pattern with the Subjunctive II in the subordinate clause:

Note that the form of Subjunctive II in this pattern coincides with the Past Perfect Simple or Continuous. It indicates that the situation regretted about is prior to the time of making a wish.

When using the Russian pattern «жаль, что», pay special attention to the changes in the form of the verb in the subordinate clause. If in the English sentence the verb in the subjunctive is in the affirmative, in the Russian equivalent it should be in the negative and vice versa.

Note: After the verb wish it is also possible to use the structure would + indefinite infinitive of the notional verb to express either complaint and annoyance about the present situation or a polite request. Mind two different subjects in the principle and in the subordinate clauses:

1.There’s no doubt that the Mayor of the city now wishes he listened to the opinions people were expressing about that new renovation project. _________________________________________________________________

2.Working parents wish they have more time to spend with their children. ___________________________________________________________

2.3.Subjunctive II may also be used after the pattern It’s (high) time, though it is also possible to use the for-to complex with the infinitive. It is used to express what we think we should do.

To express preference in the present or future we can use the following patterns with Subjunctive II:

I would rather/sooner smb did smth I would prefer smb did smth

Remember that there should be two different subjects in the main and subordinate clauses.

Exercise 16. React to the following situations using Subjunctive II after it’s time and I’d rather/prefer.

Model: You and your friend have to go to the country by car. Your friend is a much better driver than you. I’d prefer you drove as you’re a better driver.

1. The waste basket is overfilled. 2. Your friends want to play volleyball on the lawn barefoot. You don’t think it’s safe. 3. Your friend complains that she doesn’t have any new clothes to wear for the party. 4. The person you’re talking to is constantly interrupting you. You don’t like it very much. 5. Your friend has been bitten by a wasp. You’re worried as he has insect-bite allergy. 6. Your parents’ car is dirty. 7. Mr. Hogarth’s colleague wants to talk the things over right now, but he would like to do it tomorrow. 8. Your friend smokes too much. He constantly coughs and doesn’t feel well. 9. Your friend wants to eat out, but you think it’s better to save money and have dinner at home. 10. In the restaurant Mr. Kelly wants to order a bottle of red wine, but his wife

3.Use of Subjunctive I (Present Subjunctive)

3.1.Subjunctive I denotes an action referring to the present or future, seldom used in Modern English. It can be found in poetry and elevated prose, having a stylistic aim. It is also present in scientific and in business language clichés. Subjunctive I also occurs in some set expressions and clichés:

• come what may

• God forbid

• suffice it to say

• so be it/be it so

• be that as it may

• far be it from me

Exercise 20. Work in pairs. Respond to the sentences with Subjunctive I with a sentence/several sentences with different patterns with Subjunctive II.

Model: I suggest you ask (Subj I) your parents for advice. – I’d rather you didn’t interfere (Subj II, non-perfect)./Why are you treating me as if I were a child (Subj II, non-perfect)? I can make decisions myself./ If I wanted to talk to my parents about the situation, I would have done it long ago (Subj II, mixed condition).

1.I suggest (that) you (should) admit your mistake and apologise.

2.My advice is (that) he (should) explain his behaviour at the party.

3.It’s desirable (that) no one (should) bring any reference materials at the exam.

4.My purpose is (that) you (should) get a good education.
