Модальные глаголы не изменяются ни по лицам, ни по числам. Модальные глаголы употребляются только в сочетании с ин-

финитивом смыслового глагола без частицы «to».

Модальные глаголы образуют отрицательные и вопросительные формы без вспомогательного глагола «to do».

Наиболее употребительные модальные глаголы – can, may, must.

Глагол can «мочь» передает

- физическую и умственную способность

He can run quite well. Он может бегать довольно хорошо.

- просьбу или разрешение

Can I leave my coat here? Могу ли я оставить здесь свое пальто?

-No, you mustn’t.

-No, you may not.

-в сочетании с глаголами чувства и восприятия can не переводится, а придает оттенок усилия действия

Can you hear this strange noise? Вы слышите этот странный шум?

Глагол may «мочь» передает - просьбу, разрешение

May I go there? Могу ли я пойти туда?

-Yes, you may go there.

-No, you may not go there.

-No, you mustn’t go there. (категорический запрет)

-предположение, вероятность

He may come in the evening. Он, может быть, придет вечером.

- упрек, замечание. В этом значение употребляется только

глагол might.

 

You might do it yourself.

Вы могли бы сделать это сами.

Глагол must «должен» передает - необходимость, обязанность

I must translate this text today. Мне нужно перевести этот текст сегодня.

- вероятность, возможность

The rain must stop soon. Дождь, вероятно, скоро перестанет. He must be reading the newspaper. Он, должно быть, читает газету.

Training exercises:

I. Read and translate the sentences:

1. I can play chess well. 2. You may not smoke here. 3. He must speak to the doctor himself. 4. We cannot cross the river at this place. 5. When could he leave the town? 6. You may use dictionaries. 7. You might come in time. 8. Can you help me to translate the text? 9. The answer may solve the problem.

II. Translate the sentences, pay attention to the equivalents:

1. He will be able to leave the classroom in 10 minutes. 2. I shall have to take down to my work after dinner. 3. They were to take part in the conference. 4. She did not have to be present at this lecture. 5. The patient will not be allowed to walk for a week. 6. Yesterday she had to write an article for the newspaper. 7. Modern polyclinic is to be built in new region of our town.

III. Put these sentences into the Past and Future Indefinite Tense using equivalents:

1.My friend must return to the Academy by the 1st of September.

2.This viral infection may cause chronic disease. 3. The students must attend lectures and practical classes. 4. You can improve your knowledge and achieve better results. 5. This student can study foreign languages rather quickly. 6. You may get the results of this investigation. 7. The examination must take place on Friday.

Перфектный инфинитив после модальных глаголов.

Can в сочетании с Perfect Infinitive употребляется в отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях.

Can переводится – «не мог», а Perfect Infinitive – глаголом в неопределенной форме;

Can переводится – «не может быть, чтобы», а Perfect Infinitive

глаголом в прошедшем времени

He cannot have known this. – Он не мог знать этого. / Не может

быть, чтобы он знал это.

При переводе вопросительных предложений пользуются словом – «неужели».

Can he have known this? – Неужели он знал это?

May в сочетании с Perfect Infinitive.

May переводится – «может быть, возможно», а Perfect Infinitive – глаголом в прошедшем времени.

The scientist may have got valuable findings. – Ученый может быть (возможно) получил ценные данные.

Must в сочетании с Perfect Infinitive.

Must переводится – «должно быть, вероятно», а Perfect Infinitive – глаголом в прошедшем времени.

The doctor must have examined the patient already. – Врач должно быть (вероятно) уже обследовал больного.

I. Translate the sentences:

1. Patient Ivanov must have been operated on. 2. The scientists may have completed this experiment. 3. She cannot have administered such treatment. 4. Pain must have been controlled already. 5. The disease may not have been investigated yet. 6. Can the patient have developed such a bad pain in the stomach after taking the medicine? 7. You must have drawn a correct conclusion.

Степени сравнения прилагательных.

Как известно, существительные определяются прилагательными, которые указывают их свойства. Одни и те же свойства могут отличаться друг от друга количественно, что дает возможность сравнивать отдельные существительные друг с другом.

Имена прилагательные (наречия) имеют три степени сравнения: положительную, сравнительную и превосходную.

Сравнительная и превосходная степени образуются двумя способами:

-посредством прибавления суффиксов;

-с помощью специальных слов.

Степени сравнения односложных и некоторых двусложных прилагательных (оканчивающихся на -le, -y, -er, -ow) образуются путём прибавления суффиксов:

-в сравнительной степени er;

-в превосходной степени est.

Правописание имён прилагательных:

Перед прилагательными в превосходной степени всегда употребляется артикль. Перед наречиями в превосходной степени артикль не употребляется.

Если перед словом «most» стоит неопределенный артикль (или отсутствует перед существительным во мн. числе), то оно указывает на очень высокую степень качества

a most difficult problem - очень (весьма, чрезвычайно) трудная проблема

most difficult problems - очень трудные проблемы

Если слово «most» употребляется перед существительным во мн. числе, то оно переводится словом «большинство»

most people - большинство людей most of them - большинство из них

При сравнении двух предметов, одинаковых по качеству или количеству, прилагательное (наречие) в положительной степени ставится между словами as … as.

При сравнении предметов, неодинаковых по качеству или количеству, употребляются слова not so … as.

При сравнении двух предметов употребляется союз than.

This boy is as tall as your son.

Этот мальчик такой же

This boy is not so tall as your son.

высокий, как ваш сын.

Этот мальчик не такой

This boy is taller than your son.

высокий, как ваш сын.

Этот мальчик выше, чем

 

ваш сын.

Когда в сочетании as … as с прилагательным указывается величина (обычно в цифрах), то его следует переводить словами равняется, составляет, доходит до или вообще не переводить.

Rain continued for as long as 4 hours. Дождь продолжался 4 часа.

Если перед прилагательным в положительной степени, стоящим между союзом as … as употребляются счетные наречия half в два раза меньше, twice в два раза больше или количе-

ственное числительное со словом time раз, то такие сочетания переводятся следующим образом:

half as much as…

в два раза меньше, чем…

twice as much as…

в два раза больше, чем…

three times as long as…

в три раза длиннее, чем…

four times as high as…

в четыре раза выше, чем…

This book is twice as thick as that one . Эта книга в два раза толще, чем та.

Для передачи зависимости одного качества от другого ( в русском - чем… тем…) перед прилагательными (наречиями) в сравнительной степени стоят слова the… the… . При этом следует помнить что в предложениях с подобной конструкцией может отсутствовать сказуемое.

The lower the temperature, the more colds.

Чем ниже температура, тем больше простудных заболеваний.

Training exercises:

1. Give Comparative and Superlative Degrees of the following adjectives:

large, little, great, heavy, difficult, good, slow, important, soon, many, easy, new, bad, young, old, small, expensive,

2. Give the adjectives in the Positive Degree:

the biggest, longer, easier, the hardest, the heaviest, thinner, lower, the greatest, newer, colder, the hottest, the shortest.

3. Read and translate the sentences into Russian:

1. The longer the nights, the shorter the days. 2. The more we read, the better we speak. 3. The less you learn, the less you know. 4. The larger the windows, the lighter the rooms. 5. The sooner we finish our work, the earlier we can go home. 6. The red pencil is longer than the green one. 7. Give me the longer pencil. 8. He has the lighter room than I have. 9. It is better for you to live in a warmer climate.

10. The students translate easier texts at the examination than at the lessons. 11. He can read the most difficult texts without any help.

5. Read the text. Put in the necessary form for each adjective in brackets. Translate the text:

The Americans are very … (proud) of their country.
