CRIME INVESTIGATION
Criminal investigation is an applied science that involves the study of facts, which are used to identify, locate and prove the guilt of an accused criminal. A criminal investigator is a person who collects facts to identify and locate the guilty party and to provide evidence of his guilt. A complete criminal inves-
tigation can include search, interviews, interrogations, collection and preservation of evidence, as well as various methods of investigation.
Criminal investigation is an ancient science that may have roots as far back as 1700 BC in the writings of the Code of Hammurabi*. In the code it is suggested that both the accuser and accused had the right to present evidence they collected. In the modern era criminal investigations are most often done by government police forces.

collection of the evidence
There are three phases of the investigation: 1) identification of an offender; 2) search for and location of the suspect; 3) collection of the evidence for court presentation.
In the first stage the investigator identifies some person as the perpetrator of the criminal act. The identification takes place in one of the following ways: confession, eyewitness testimony, or circumstantial evidence.
238
The second stage of the investigation deals with detection and location of the offender. Usually the criminal is not hiding, he is unknown. In many cases it is necessary to trace a fugitive who is hiding. A great part of investigative work deals with “finding” missing or wanted persons. A patient study of criminal records and the information from officials are often necessary to obtain additional evidence and to locate or to identify a person. Investigating officers often use unofficial sources of information such as informants. The informant is a person who gives the police officer confidential information about the circumstances of a crime as his civic responsibility and duty.
Let us assume that the police have identified the criminal and he is now in custody. The investigation is, however, far from complete; it has entered the third and often the most difficult phase, namely, gathering the facts to prove the guilt of the accused in the trial.
The final test of a criminal investigation is the presentation of the evidence in court. The investigator must identify the defendant, produce competent and credible witnesses, identify the physical evidence and present the criminal case in an orderly and logical fashion.
* Hammurabi – Хаммурапи, царь Вавилонии (1792-1750 до н.э.). Ввел кодекс законов рабовладельческого права.
