Miranda warning

Gerund Complex (Герундиальная конструкция)

I. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. Law and legislation date back to the days when primitive communal society which had no need for having laws, gave way to first class-based socio-economic formation.

3. A wise legislator will prevent crime instead of meting out punishment for it.

13. The officer’s being very experienced resulted from his twenty years of police work.

14. The patrol action resulted in some suspects being arrested.

II. Translate the sentences into Russian paying attention to Gerund Complex.

Pattern: Dr. Brown’s being absent was very strange. - То, что доктор Браун отсутствовал, было очень странно.

1. His being charged with a felony surprised us.

2. Their filing a complaint to the court was quite unexpected.

3. Officer Smith’s making a search without a warrant was illegal.

4. Her being prosecuted for a theft is natural.

5. His being placed on bail is explained by the nature of his offence.

6. The person’s being fined can be regarded as a just punishment.

7. His pleading not guilty does not mean that he is innocent.

8. The boys being accused of petty crimes is not surprising.

9. These crimes are alike in having the same features.

10. My brother’s becoming a good judge resulted from his great experience.

11. Laws and men who enforce them reflect social systems, so there is no doubt of law being class law and justice being class justice.

TEST YOURSELF

Translate the sentences.

1. Nobody knew about his being sent into the Space after his having passed the qualification exam without special training for such a mission.

2. Her getting married to a well-known mafia christian father made her life awful.

3. The parents asked the police not to inform public about their children’s being kidnapped.

4. Because of being worried about their children’s life the parents didn’t want anybody to know about their children’s kidnapping.

5. Instead of writing out new words by himself he asked his sister to do it.

6. They have no experience in translating special documents into English for the judge to understand.
