Аббревиатура
Аббревиатура – это сокращение, составленное из начальных букв слов, входящих в сложное слово или словосочетание. Такие сокращения могут читаться как алфавитные названия букв, например:
MP /'em'pJ/ = Member of Parliament – член парламента,
или как если бы это были обыкновенные слова, например:
UNO /'jHnqV/ = United Nations Organization – Организация Объединенных наций (ООН)
Особым типом сокращений, характерным для английского языка, являются сокращения на письме латинских слов, которые читаются не как латинские слова, а переводятся на английский язык:
i.e. (лат. id est – то есть) = that is
e.g. (лат. exampli gratia - например) = for example
etc. (лат. et. cetera – и так далее) = and so on
