Братья Монгольфье французские изобретатели воздушного шара
Они были романтиками и учёными. Панически боявшиеся высоты, они мечтали научить людей взлетать в небо. Братья Монгольфье открыли эру воздухоплавания и тем самым положили начало долгому пути человека к звёздам.
Жозеф-Мишель Монгольфье родился в 1740 году в небольшом французском городке Анноне. Через пять лет на свет появился его брат, Жак-Этьен. Их отец, владелец бумажной фабрики, постарался дать детям хорошее образование. Однако старший сын его разочаровал. Жозеф был романтичным, легкомысленным подростком и терпеть не мог школьной зубрёжки. В 13 лет он бросил учёбу и сбежал из дома. Юноша мечтал о солнечных лужайках, конных прогулках с дамами, но столкнулся только с нищетой и голодом.
Не выдержав лишений, Жозеф вернулся домой, чтобы с мольбами о прощении упасть в ноги родителям. Раскаявшись, он усердно занялся учёбой, особенно хорошо ему давались физика и химия.
Этьен, младший из братьев, тоже был мечтателем, но, в отличие от брата, рос послушным и усидчивым ребёнком. Уже в молодости он стал известным архитектором. Позднее Этьен унаследовал семейный бизнес и вступил во владение бумажной фабрикой отца. Старший брат Жозеф стал его компаньоном.
Дело было налажено хорошо, доходы семьи росли, и у братьев оставалось много свободного времени. Они посвящали его излюбленным занятиям: науке и мечтам о полётах. Однажды, наблюдая за облаками, один из братьев предложил: а почему бы не наполнить горячим паром холщовый шар? Быть может, он взлетит?
Опыт оказался неудачным: пар моментально остывал и каплями осаждался на холсте – шар так и не поднялся в воздух. Братья попробовали наполнить шар водородом – газ мгновенно улетучивался через ткань.
Тогда Жозеф и Этьен изготовили бумажный шар – и снова разочарование: водород просачивался и сквозь поры в бумаге.
Как это иногда случается в истории открытий, помог случай. Однажды во время званого обеда жена одного из братьев подошла к камину. Поток горячего воздуха вдруг поднял подол её юбки. Женщина, на которую все обратили внимание, смутилась и покраснела. А Жозефа и Этьена вдруг осенило: горячий воздух – вот чем нужно наполнить воздушный шар! И – о чудо! На этот раз эксперимент оказался удачным – шар взлетел!
5 июня 1783 года состоялась первая публичная демонстрация изобретения братьев Монгольфье. На центральной площади городка Аннон собрались тысячи людей. Над толпой возвышался громадный, с трёхэтажный дом, шар. На нем красовалась латинская надпись: «Аd аstrа», что значит «К звездам!». Восемь сильных мужчин едва удерживали это чудовище за верёвки. Жозеф скомандовал отпускать, шар вырвался и полетел вертикально в небо. Площадь восхищенно ахнула!
Следующий полёт «монгольфьера» (так назвали изобретение братьев) состоялся в Париже в начале сентября 1783 г. Зрелище почтил вниманием сам король Людовик XVI, проявивший к воздухоплаванию живейший интерес. Братья подвесили к шару корзину для пассажиров. Первыми чести подняться в воздух удостоились животные – утка, петух и баран. Полёт прошёл удачно, животные не пострадали.
Но, несмотря на успех, Жозеф и Этьен чувствовали разочарование – полёт человека пока что оставался мечтой. В ученых кругах тем временем развернулась острая дискуссия о безопасности такого полета: опасались, что из-за нехватки воздуха на высоте люди могут задохнуться. Король предложил отправить в полёт двух приговорённых к смерти узников, однако его близкий друг маркиз д’Арланд возмутился: «Неужели великая честь первыми вознестись к небесам будет принадлежать преступникам? Полечу я!».
Маркиз д’Арланд взлетел на монгольфьере 21 ноября 1783 г. вместе с известным учёным Пилатом де Розье. Свидетелями полёта стало множество людей, большинство из них были уверены, что гибель смельчаков неизбежна. Но все страхи оказались напрасными: люди благополучно вернулись на землю
На братьев Монгольфье обрушилась слава. Во Франции началось повальное увлечение воздушными шарами, которое вскоре распространилось и в другие страны. Но сами братья в воздух подняться не торопились: оба панически боялись высоты. Романтик Жозеф решился на это только раз. Полет состоялся 5 января 1784 г. и чуть не окончился катастрофой. Шар вдруг потерял высоту и упал, корзина с пассажирами сильно ударилась о землю и развалилась, при этом больше всех пострадал сам создатель аэростата.
После этого случая Этьен заявил, что не полетит никогда. Он сдержал обещание – умер в августе 1799 г., так и не побывав в небе. Жозеф пережил младшего брата на одиннадцать лет и продолжал заниматься исследованиями, основав собственную лабораторию. В истории открытий он также известен как изобретатель парашюта, калориметра и гидравлического пресса. Но монгольфьер до сих пор остаётся символом прорыва Человека в небо.
